The Nigeria National League (NNL) has expelled Sporting Supreme from the competition and banned its management from participating in league activities for five years.
The decision was confirmed in a statement released on the NNL official website on Wednesday. The league cited Sporting Supreme’s failure to play two consecutive matches as the main reason for the expulsion.
According to the statement, Sporting Supreme did not honour their fixtures against Jigawa Golden Stars and Ranchers Bees. Such actions were considered a clear breach of the NNL regulations, which have strict rules regarding match participation and commitment to the league schedule.
“Sporting Supreme has breached the Nigeria National League rules by failing to play two consecutive matches,” the statement read. “As a consequence, the team has been expelled, fined N10 million, and all matches involving them have been cancelled. Points for and against the team are also annulled.”
The league also announced that the management of Sporting Supreme would face a five-year ban from any activities under the NNL. This includes administrative, managerial, and executive roles in the league.
This expulsion marks Sporting Supreme as the second club to be removed from the Nigeria National League in recent times, following Dakkada FC’s earlier disqualification. Dakkada was expelled after failing to meet league requirements, a move that sent shockwaves through the country’s football community.
The NNL is Nigeria’s second-tier professional football league, below the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). It is managed by the League Management Company and serves as a key platform for clubs aspiring to reach the top tier of Nigerian football.
Clubs participating in the NNL are required to maintain strict adherence to league rules, including participation in all scheduled matches, proper registration of players, and financial compliance. Failure to meet these obligations can lead to penalties, including fines, point deductions, or expulsion.
Sporting Supreme’s expulsion has significant implications for the league and its ongoing season. All scheduled matches involving the team have now been cancelled, and points earned against or by Sporting Supreme have been nullified. This could affect promotion and relegation battles as other teams adjust to the revised league table.
League officials highlighted that the decision was necessary to maintain discipline and fairness in the competition. “The integrity of the league is paramount,” the statement said. “Allowing teams to ignore fixtures undermines the competition and affects other clubs who prepare and commit resources to play every match.”
Sporting Supreme’s management has not yet issued a response to the expulsion and ban. It remains unclear whether the club intends to appeal the decision or accept the sanctions imposed by the league.
The NNL continues to face challenges with club compliance, infrastructure, and funding. Many teams struggle with meeting travel, accommodation, and operational costs, which sometimes leads to missed fixtures. However, the league insists that rules must be enforced equally across all clubs to maintain professionalism.
For fans of Sporting Supreme, the news comes as a disappointment, as the club had been building a following and competing for promotion. Supporters have expressed concern about the impact of the expulsion on players, staff, and the local football community associated with the club.
The Nigeria National League will now continue its season with the remaining clubs, focusing on ensuring compliance and fairness in every match. Clubs are expected to adhere strictly to league schedules, and any further breaches will be met with swift action.
As the league moves forward, the expulsion of Sporting Supreme is a reminder of the importance of discipline and commitment in Nigerian football. It highlights the challenges facing clubs in lower-tier leagues, while emphasizing the need for consistent governance and enforcement of rules.
