Shock, grief, and anger have taken over Isiagu community in Awka, Anambra State, following a tragic incident that led to the death of two young siblings. The children were reportedly pushed into a river by another youth while they were out searching for firewood. The incident has not only left the community in deep sorrow but has also sparked debate after the parents of the alleged suspect were banished from the area.
According to residents, the incident happened when the two siblings went into a nearby bush to gather firewood, a common activity for children in many rural communities. During the outing, they were said to have encountered another youth from the same community. An argument reportedly broke out, after which the youth allegedly pushed the two children into a river.
The children were later found dead, triggering widespread mourning across Isiagu. Family members, neighbours, and community leaders described the deaths as painful and shocking, especially given the young age of the victims.
Following the incident, tension rose in the community as residents demanded justice for the deceased children. After a series of meetings involving community elders and traditional leaders, the parents of the alleged suspect were banished from Isiagu. The decision was said to be based on long-standing community customs that hold families responsible for the actions of their children.
The banishment means that the couple must leave the community and are no longer allowed to live or participate in social activities there. Their property and future ties to the area may also be affected, according to local sources.
The action has since generated strong reactions both within and outside the community. While some residents believe the decision was necessary to maintain peace and uphold tradition, others have questioned whether it is fair to punish parents for the alleged crime of their son.
“This is a very sad situation for everyone,” a community member said. “We lost two innocent children, and now another family has been torn apart. But the elders believe this is the way to cleanse the land and prevent further trouble.”
In many parts of southeastern Nigeria, traditional practices still play a strong role in handling serious offences, especially those involving death. Such customs are often meant to restore balance, prevent revenge attacks, and show that the community does not support wrongdoing. However, these practices sometimes clash with modern laws and human rights principles.
As of the time of this report, it is unclear whether the alleged suspect has been arrested or handed over to the police. Residents say security agencies have been informed, and an investigation is expected to follow.
The Anambra State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement on the incident. However, sources say officers are monitoring the situation to prevent further violence or unrest in the community.
The tragedy has also renewed discussions about child safety in rural areas. Many parents in Isiagu and nearby communities are now more cautious about allowing children to go far from home alone, especially near rivers and forests.
