The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has advised the Amanyanabo of Okochiri Kingdom, King Ateke Tom, to stay away from direct involvement in politics ahead of future political activities in Rivers State. Instead, Wike urged the traditional ruler to continue guiding his people and helping to maintain peace and unity in the community.
Wike made this statement on Saturday during a courtesy visit to the monarch at his palace. The visit came shortly after the minister’s “thank you” tour of Okrika Local Government Area, where he met with supporters and community leaders to appreciate them for their continued backing.
Speaking during the visit, Wike praised King Ateke Tom for his leadership and for keeping Okochiri Kingdom united over the years. He noted that the role of traditional rulers is very important in society, especially in promoting peace, resolving disputes, and providing guidance to their people.
According to Wike, traditional institutions should remain neutral and avoid open political involvement, especially as the country moves closer to another election season. He stressed that monarchs command respect across different political lines and should protect that position by staying above partisan politics.
“It is not going to be business as usual. Allow us to play our game, and if there is any problem, call us to settle,” Wike said. The former Rivers State governor also hinted that key decisions concerning the 2027 general elections had already been taken. However, he did not provide details of those decisions during the visit.
