A yet-to-be-identified teenager has died after an incident at a hotel swimming pool in Owode-Ede, Osun State, leading to tension in the area and protests by family members and associates of the deceased.
The incident happened on New Year’s Day at a hotel located along the busy Osogbo–Gbongan Road. According to information gathered, the teenager reportedly drowned in the hotel’s swimming pool. The exact circumstances surrounding the death are still unclear as investigations are ongoing.
Residents of the area said the incident cast a shadow over New Year celebrations in the community, as news of the teenager’s death spread quickly. Many people expressed shock and sadness over the development, especially because the victim was said to be young.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the teenager had not been officially released, and details about how the incident occurred remain sketchy. It is not yet known whether the teenager was swimming alone, with friends, or under supervision at the time of the incident.
Tension rose the following day when some friends and family members of the deceased returned to the hotel to express their anger and dissatisfaction over how the situation was handled by the hotel management.
Sources said the protesters believed the hotel did not respond properly after the incident and failed to give clear explanations to the family. This led to a gathering at the hotel premises, which caused fear and panic among guests, workers, and residents in the area.
Eyewitnesses said the protesters were demanding answers and accountability from the hotel management. Some guests reportedly left the hotel out of fear, while business activities around the area slowed down temporarily.
“The incident happened on January 1 when the teenager died inside the hotel’s swimming pool and was confirmed dead,” an eyewitness said.
“On Friday, some people who were unhappy with the hotel’s response came back to protest. The police and NSCDC intervened, and the matter was brought under control.”
The situation prompted a quick response from security agencies, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Their prompt intervention helped to prevent the protest from turning violent.
Security personnel were deployed to the hotel and surrounding areas to maintain law and order. According to sources, their presence helped calm the protesters and reassured members of the public.
Residents praised the swift action of the security agencies, saying it helped to stop the situation from getting out of hand.
“The police and NSCDC arrived early and handled the situation professionally,” a local resident said. “If not for their intervention, the protest could have turned into something more serious.”
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Mr Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, said the situation did not escalate into a mob action, contrary to rumours circulating in some quarters.
According to him, the family of the deceased only returned to the hotel to express their grievances and seek clarification over what happened.
“The victim died inside the hotel’s swimming pool,” Giwa-Alade said. “The family went back to express their concerns, but the issue was settled peacefully through the intervention of security personnel.”
He explained that there was no breakdown of law and order, as the protest was controlled without the use of force.
The police spokesman added that the Nigeria Police Force has commenced an investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause of the teenager’s death.
He assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and transparent, and that the findings would be made public at the conclusion of the inquiry.
“The police have started investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death,” Giwa-Alade said. “Our findings will be made public when the investigation is concluded.”
He also urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could increase tension in the area.
The incident has once again raised concerns about safety standards at hotels and recreational facilities across the country, especially those with swimming pools.
Swimming pools are popular attractions during festive periods such as New Year celebrations. However, experts have repeatedly warned that poor safety measures, lack of trained lifeguards, and inadequate supervision can lead to tragic incidents.
In recent years, there have been reports of drowning incidents at hotels, resorts, and private facilities in different parts of Nigeria. These incidents have often sparked public debates about the need for stricter regulation and enforcement of safety rules.
Some residents of Owode-Ede said the tragedy should serve as a wake-up call to hotel owners and relevant authorities.
“Hotels must ensure that their swimming pools are safe and properly monitored,” a community leader said. “There should be clear safety rules, warning signs, and trained staff on duty at all times.”
Family members of the deceased are said to be seeking clarity on what happened and whether safety procedures were followed at the hotel. They are also calling for accountability from those responsible.
Community members have urged the authorities to ensure that justice is done, while also respecting due process.
Meanwhile, the death of the teenager has left the community in mourning. Neighbours and acquaintances described the incident as painful and unfortunate, especially coming at the start of a new year.
Many residents gathered in small groups to discuss the incident, expressing sympathy for the family of the deceased.
“It is a sad way to begin the year,” a resident said. “We pray that the family finds comfort and that such incidents do not happen again.”
