Kano city was thrown into fear and tension over the weekend following a violent clash between two rival gang groups that left one person dead and nine others arrested by the police. The incident, which occurred in the Kawo and Mariri areas of the metropolis, has once again highlighted the growing concern over youth gang violence in Nigeria’s northern cities.
Eyewitnesses said the clash occurred at around 9 p.m. on January 4, 2026, involving two rival groups led by Kabalo Snu and Faizu Mohammed, also known as Chabross. The feud reportedly originated from Yar Kasuwa in Kawo, and tensions had been building between the groups for some time.
The violence was reportedly a revenge attack following an earlier confrontation earlier the same day. At about 1:40 p.m., Faizu Mohammed allegedly injured Kabalo Snu during a separate fight. This attack reportedly enraged Kabalo’s supporters, who organized a reprisal later in the evening.
During the retaliatory clash, Faizu Mohammed sustained serious injuries after being stabbed in the neck with a sharp object. He was immediately rushed to Muhammadu Sanusi Specialist Hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries. His body was subsequently released to his family for burial.
“The incident is very sad. It is shocking to see young people resolve disputes with violence instead of dialogue,” said a resident of Kawo who witnessed part of the clash. “The city has been tense, but thankfully the police intervened quickly.”
The clashes in Kano are part of a larger trend of youth gang activities in major Nigerian cities. Experts note that such violent incidents often stem from unresolved conflicts, rivalry over territory, and personal disputes, which escalate into deadly confrontations.

When the police arrived, they discovered that the suspects had already broken into a shop belonging to Kabalo. Authorities acted swiftly, arresting nine suspects, while several others managed to escape. Various items were recovered during the operation, according to police sources.
The swift action by the police helped restore calm in the affected neighborhoods, and normal activities gradually resumed. However, residents remain concerned about the possibility of further retaliation and ongoing gang-related tensions in the area.
Police authorities have stated that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and prevent future outbreaks of violence. “We are working tirelessly to bring all suspects to justice and ensure the safety of residents in Kano,” a senior police officer said. “Gang violence is unacceptable, and anyone involved will be prosecuted under the law.”
The Kano State Police Command has also called on residents to report suspicious movements or activities to help prevent further incidents. Citizens’ cooperation is seen as crucial in tackling the rising trend of gang clashes in the city.
