The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that leadership is temporary and that no individual can remain in power forever. He made this statement on Saturday during a thank-you visit to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, used the occasion to remind his supporters and residents of the state that leadership comes with a time limit and should not be taken as a permanent position.

“We should also know that today, I’m a leader. Tomorrow will be your own turn too,” Wike said. “No one will be a leader forever. It is not possible. God can never allow that.”

Addressing the crowd, Wike stressed that leadership is seasonal and that everyone has a time to serve. According to him, power is not meant to be held endlessly by one person.

“People are saying ‘Wike is a leader’ as of today. Yes, but it can never be forever,” he said. “Man comes, man goes. Everybody has his own turn and everybody has his own time.”

Wike’s statement appeared to be a message of humility and acceptance of change, especially at a time when political discussions around influence and leadership roles are becoming more intense across the country.

Nyesom Wike remains one of the most influential political figures in Rivers State and the South-South region. He served as governor of Rivers State for eight years, from 2015 to 2023, before being appointed as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory by President Bola Tinubu.

During his time as governor, Wike was known for his strong political style and major infrastructure projects in Rivers State, particularly in Port Harcourt and its surroundings. His leadership also came with political controversies and strong control of the state’s political structure.

Since leaving office, Wike has continued to play a key role in both Rivers State and national politics, especially following his decision to support President Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, despite being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the time.

During the thank-you visit, Wike expressed appreciation to the people of Port Harcourt and Rivers State for their continued support, especially for backing the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

He said the support shown by Rivers people towards the federal government has helped the state attract attention and benefits from the centre.

Wike urged residents not to hesitate in supporting President Tinubu’s second-term ambition when the time comes, arguing that the state has already started benefiting from the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Renewed Hope Agenda is the policy framework of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, focusing on economic reforms, infrastructure development, security, and social welfare. Since assuming office in 2023, the administration has introduced major reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy and changes in the foreign exchange system.

While these policies have drawn mixed reactions, supporters of the government, including Wike, have insisted that the reforms are necessary to fix the economy and place Nigeria on a stronger footing.

Wike told the Port Harcourt audience that Rivers State stands to gain more by maintaining a strong relationship with the federal government.

He said, “We have seen how Rivers State has benefited. We should continue to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.”

Rivers State, an oil-rich state in the Niger Delta, plays a key role in Nigeria’s economy. Political relations between the state and the federal government have often shaped the level of projects and attention the state receives.

Wike’s comments have drawn attention on social media and in political discussions. Supporters see his words as a reminder that leadership should be about service rather than personal power.

Critics, however, argue that true acceptance of leadership change should reflect in political actions and respect for opposing views.

Despite differing opinions, many agree that Wike remains a strong voice in Nigerian politics, whose statements often carry weight both within and outside Rivers State.

As Nigeria continues to face economic challenges, political realignments, and preparations for future elections, messages from key political figures are closely watched.

Wike’s remarks highlight a broader message about the nature of power and the need for leaders to understand their time and responsibility.

Whether his words will influence political behaviour in Rivers State and beyond remains to be seen. For now, his message to the people of Port Harcourt was clear: leadership is temporary, service is important and support for the current administration should continue.
