The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid glowing tribute to the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, a Muslim religious leader who saved the lives of about 262 Christians during a deadly terrorist attack in 2018. CAN described the Imam’s actions as a powerful example of courage, compassion, and shared humanity at a time of great danger.
In a statement signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the Christian body said the Imam’s life and sacrifice would never be forgotten. According to CAN, Imam Abdullahi showed rare moral bravery by choosing to protect innocent people even when his own life was at risk.
“By choosing to protect innocent lives at great personal risk, he saved 262 Christians during a violent massacre in 2018, standing firmly on the side of humanity when it mattered most,” the statement said.
The association noted that the Imam’s action went beyond religious identity and proved that the value of human life is greater than any difference in faith or belief.
“His actions transcended religious boundaries and powerfully affirmed that the sanctity of human life is sacred above all else,” Archbishop Okoh said.
Imam Abubakar Abdullahi became widely known across Nigeria and beyond after reports emerged that he sheltered hundreds of Christians who were fleeing from armed attackers. At a time when fear, violence, and suspicion threatened to divide communities, the Imam chose to act differently.
The 2018 attack happened during a period when many parts of Nigeria were facing serious security challenges. Terrorist attacks, communal clashes, and banditry had forced many people to flee their homes. Religious and ethnic tensions were also high, with some groups using violence to create fear and division.
It was in this dangerous environment that Imam Abdullahi opened his doors to Christians who were being hunted by attackers. Instead of turning them away or thinking only of his own safety, he chose to protect them.
CAN said this single act of courage saved hundreds of families from pain, loss, and grief. Many of those who survived the attack did so because the Imam decided that protecting human life was more important than anything else.
“This singular act of heroism did more than save lives,” CAN stated. “It reinforced hope, strengthened interfaith harmony, and reminded our nation that peace is possible when conscience, love, and faith guide our actions.”
Over the years, Nigeria has struggled with religious mistrust, especially between Christians and Muslims in areas affected by violence. Attacks carried out in the name of religion have deepened fear and suspicion in many communities.
However, CAN said the life of Imam Abdullahi showed that religion can also be a force for peace and unity. By risking his life for people of another faith, the Imam became a symbol of what true religion stands for.
“In a world often divided by suspicion and hatred, the Imam stood as a bridge-builder and a living symbol of what true religion represents,” the statement added.
In recognition of his bravery, CAN honoured Imam Abdullahi during its Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021. The award was given to celebrate his selfless action and to encourage other religious leaders to follow the path of peace and compassion.
CAN recalled that the award was not just a public honour but a message to Nigerians that acts of courage and love should be celebrated, regardless of religious background.
While mourning his passing, CAN said that physical awards and plaques may not last forever, but the Imam’s legacy would continue to shine for generations.
“While plaques may fade with time, his legacy will endure as a shining example for religious leaders, communities, and generations to come,” CAN said.
The association stressed that Imam Abdullahi’s story should not be allowed to fade from public memory. According to CAN, his courage deserves more than words of praise.
“We believe that such courage deserves not only remembrance but amplification,” the statement said.
CAN therefore called on Nigerians, government authorities, and religious groups to continue to honour the memory of the late Imam. It also urged engagement with his family and wider public recognition of his sacrifice.
“We therefore call for continued honour to his memory, including engagement with his family and broad public recognition of his noble sacrifice, so that his story may inspire unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence across our nation,” CAN added.
The Christian body said remembering Imam Abdullahi is important at a time when Nigeria is still battling insecurity and division. According to CAN, stories like his remind Nigerians that peaceful coexistence is possible, even in the face of violence.
CAN also extended its condolences to the Imam’s family, his community, and all those who were inspired by his life.
“As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life well lived in service to God and humanity,” the statement said. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, his community, and all who were touched by his remarkable example.”
Across Nigeria, reactions have continued to pour in from religious leaders, civil society groups, and ordinary citizens who see the Imam as a hero of peace. Many have described him as proof that courage and kindness still exist, even in difficult times.
For many Nigerians, the Imam’s actions serve as a reminder that the country’s strength lies in its diversity and shared values. His decision to protect others, despite the danger, showed that love for humanity can overcome fear.
As Nigeria continues to search for peace and unity, CAN believes the example set by Imam Abubakar Abdullahi should guide both leaders and citizens.
His life, CAN said, will continue to speak long after his death, reminding Nigerians that when faith is guided by love and conscience, it can become a powerful force for good.
