Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has broken his silence on the impeachment notice issued against him and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, describing the move by the Rivers State House of Assembly as a “love letter.” The governor insisted that he remains firmly in office and is focused on protecting lives and property while delivering good governance to the people of the state.
Governor Fubara made the remarks on Saturday while speaking as the Special Guest at the grand finale of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament, held in the state capital. The event brought together top polo players, diplomats, business leaders, and sports lovers from within and outside Nigeria.
This was the first time the governor publicly addressed the impeachment issue since the Rivers State House of Assembly, last Thursday, wrote to the Chief Judge of the state, requesting the constitution of a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against him and his deputy.
Despite the political tension, Fubara struck a calm and confident tone, assuring residents that his administration would not support any action capable of threatening peace and safety in Rivers State.
“What is important is that I am still the Governor of Rivers State,” Fubara said. “We will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people.”
The impeachment notice has further heightened political tension in Rivers State, which has been gripped by a power struggle involving key political actors since the governor assumed office. The situation has drawn national attention, with concerns raised about stability in one of Nigeria’s most economically important states.
Rivers State is a major oil-producing state and a key hub for business and maritime activities in the Niger Delta. Any political crisis in the state often raises fears about security, investment, and economic activities.
At the polo tournament, Fubara made it clear that his top priority remains the safety of residents and visitors. He said the peaceful conduct of the week-long tournament was proof that his administration is maintaining law and order despite political challenges.
“I am happy that you had your tournament for one week, and the president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club told me there was no incident,” the governor said. “It shows that we are working and that Rivers State is safe. That is the basic responsibility of government.”
Fubara also expressed disappointment that political crises in the state have repeatedly coincided with the annual Port Harcourt Polo Tournament over the past three years. He recalled similar challenges during previous editions of the event.
“It is really unfortunate that each time you are having your tournament, there is always one problem,” he said. “In 2024, you came to me and made some promises, but that January was hell. In 2025, you didn’t bother to come to me. This 2026, which I thought would be the finest, just landed me a love letter.”
His reference to the impeachment notice as a “love letter” drew laughter from the audience but also sent a clear message that he was not shaken by the move.
The governor assured the people of Rivers State that his administration would continue to function normally and carry out its responsibilities without distraction.
“Despite the challenges, we will continue to discharge our duties and support everyone who is genuinely committed to the progress of Rivers State,” he said.
Fubara also used the occasion to speak about the importance of sports and tourism in promoting peace and unity. He praised the organisers of the Port Harcourt Polo Tournament for sustaining the event and attracting international participation.
The Port Harcourt Polo Club is regarded as one of the oldest and most respected polo clubs in Nigeria, known for its natural grass pitch, which many players consider among the best in the country. The annual tournament has become a major social and sporting event in Rivers State.
Governor Fubara promised that his administration would work towards upgrading the status of the Port Harcourt Polo Club to further enhance its facilities and attract more international events.
He encouraged visitors, including foreign players and guests, to enjoy the calm environment of Port Harcourt and help correct negative perceptions about the state.
“Please enjoy the serenity of Port Harcourt,” he told the guests. “Help us tell the true story of this state by sharing positive and accurate information.”
The 2026 edition of the polo tournament featured teams from different parts of Nigeria, as well as international teams from India and Argentina. The presence of foreign players and diplomats added to the glamour of the event.
Among the dignitaries at the final match was the Argentine Ambassador to Nigeria, who watched as teams battled for honours at the well-maintained polo ground. The participation of foreign teams highlighted Rivers State’s ability to host international sporting events despite political tensions.
The impeachment process itself is expected to follow constitutional procedures. Under Nigerian law, the Chief Judge of a state is required to set up an investigative panel if the House of Assembly presents allegations of gross misconduct against a governor. The panel’s findings will then determine the next steps.
However, the process has often been controversial in Nigeria’s political history, with many impeachment attempts ending in court battles and political standoffs.
In Rivers State, the situation is further complicated by existing political divisions within the state’s leadership. These divisions have, in the past, led to protests, court cases, and tense relations between different arms of government.
For now, Governor Fubara has made it clear that he is not backing down from his duties. He said his administration remains committed to fulfilling the promises made to the people of Rivers State, including improving security, infrastructure, and economic growth.
As the political drama continues, many residents are watching closely, hoping that leaders on all sides will put the interest of the state above personal or political battles.
The peaceful conclusion of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament offered a moment of relief and celebration for many in the state. Whether that calm will be sustained in the coming weeks remains to be seen.
