Residents of Wamba community in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State were thrown into fear and tension on Sunday following a violent clash between local vigilantes and a large group of armed bandits. The confrontation, which lasted several hours, led to the death of one vigilante member and left another seriously injured.

The incident occurred along the Galma–Wamba corridor, a route that has witnessed repeated security threats in recent months. According to local sources, the trouble started when vigilante operatives on routine patrol noticed suspicious movements of armed men on motorcycles heading toward Wamba town.

Eyewitnesses said about 65 bandits, riding in groups on motorcycles, were seen advancing toward the community in what appeared to be a coordinated attack. Sensing imminent danger, the vigilantes quickly raised the alarm and mobilised more members to block the bandits from entering the town.

“The moment they saw the number of motorcycles coming, they knew something was wrong,” a resident said. “They alerted others immediately and prepared to defend the community.”

As the vigilantes organised themselves, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) also joined the operation. Together, they mounted a defensive line at strategic points around the community to prevent the attackers from gaining access.

Sources familiar with the incident said the bandits attempted to outsmart the local defenders by splitting into three groups. The plan, according to the sources, was to surround Wamba community from different directions and overwhelm the vigilantes.

However, the plan failed as the combined forces of the vigilantes and CJTF resisted the attack. This led to a fierce exchange of gunfire that lasted for a prolonged period, sending shockwaves through the community.

Residents said they were forced to stay indoors as gunshots echoed across the area. Many families reportedly hid in their homes, praying for safety as the clash continued.

“It was very scary,” a local woman said. “We could hear gunshots for a long time. People were crying, and children were frightened. Nobody knew how it would end.”

During the confrontation, several of the bandits were reportedly killed, although the exact number could not be confirmed as their bodies were taken away by fleeing members of the gang. The surviving bandits later retreated into nearby bushes and forests after realising they could not overpower the community defenders.

Despite the successful defence of the town, the vigilantes also suffered losses. One vigilante member was killed during the clash, while another sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased vigilante fought bravely until he ran out of ammunition. While attempting to retreat from the frontline, he collapsed and later died.

“He managed to escape at first,” a source said. “But after some time, he slumped and died. Another vigilante was shot and rushed for treatment.”

The death of the vigilante has thrown the community into mourning, with residents describing him as a brave defender who sacrificed his life to protect others.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Mariga Local Government Council, Hon. Aliyu Bagga Muhammad, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. He described the fallen vigilante as a hero who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

“We lost one brave man during the attack,” Muhammad said. “Another vigilante who was shot is currently undergoing treatment. We sympathise deeply with the family of the deceased and with the entire vigilante group.”

The council chairman praised the courage and determination of the local vigilantes and CJTF members, noting that their quick response prevented what could have been a devastating attack on the community.

He urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies and local security outfits by sharing timely information about suspicious movements.

“The efforts of these young men saved the community,” Muhammad said. “We call on our people to remain vigilant and continue to support security agencies to keep criminals away.”

Wamba community, like many parts of Niger State, has faced growing security challenges linked to banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery. In recent years, bandits have attacked rural communities, kidnapped residents for ransom, and disrupted farming activities.

The vast forests and difficult terrain in parts of Niger State have made it easier for criminal groups to hide and launch attacks. This has forced many communities to rely on local vigilante groups to support conventional security agencies.

The Civilian Joint Task Force and vigilante groups have become key players in community security across northern Nigeria. They often serve as the first line of defence, especially in remote areas where security forces are stretched thin.

However, these local defenders often operate with limited weapons and resources, making confrontations with well-armed bandits extremely dangerous. Security experts have repeatedly warned about the risks faced by vigilantes and called for better support and coordination with government forces.

Residents of Wamba say the latest attack shows the urgent need for stronger security presence in the area. Many farmers have expressed fear about returning to their farms, especially as the farming season approaches.

“If not for the vigilantes, the bandits would have entered the town,” a farmer said. “But we cannot rely only on them. The government needs to do more.”

In recent months, Niger State has recorded several bandit attacks across different local government areas. While security agencies have stepped up operations, communities continue to call for sustained efforts to flush criminals out of forest hideouts.

The state government has also encouraged the formation of community-based security structures while working with federal security agencies to improve intelligence gathering and response time.

As Wamba community mourns the loss of one of its defenders, residents say the incident has strengthened their resolve to stand together against criminal elements. Community leaders have called for prayers and support for the family of the deceased vigilante.

The injured vigilante is reportedly responding to treatment, raising hopes among residents that he will recover fully.
