The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service in Kano State, a development expected to transform urban transportation, reduce traffic congestion, and boost economic growth in the state’s capital and metropolitan areas.
The approval was announced by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf while addressing members of the Kano State contingent who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State. Governor Yusuf described the project as a major milestone that will modernize public transport and improve the quality of life for residents of Kano.
According to the governor, the decision to realign Kano State with the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), was strategic. It aimed to secure vital infrastructure projects such as the rail service, which will play a key role in the state’s urban and economic development.
“The Metropolitan Rail Service is a landmark project that will reposition Kano as a leading transportation hub in Northern Nigeria. It will provide a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system connecting key districts across the metropolis,” Governor Yusuf said.
He explained that the rail service will make commuting faster and safer, reduce road congestion, and provide residents with reliable and convenient transportation. It is also expected to facilitate trade, attract investment, and create jobs, while boosting Kano’s profile as a commercial and industrial centre.
The governor assured residents that the state government would work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure the project is executed transparently and efficiently, with maximum benefits for the people of Kano.
Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for approving the project and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting federal initiatives through complementary policies and infrastructure development.
