The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service in Kano State, a development expected to transform urban transportation, reduce traffic congestion, and boost economic growth in the state’s capital and metropolitan areas.
The approval was announced by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf while addressing members of the Kano State contingent who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State. Governor Yusuf described the project as a major milestone that will modernize public transport and improve the quality of life for residents of Kano.
According to the governor, the decision to realign Kano State with the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), was strategic. It aimed to secure vital infrastructure projects such as the rail service, which will play a key role in the state’s urban and economic development.
“The Metropolitan Rail Service is a landmark project that will reposition Kano as a leading transportation hub in Northern Nigeria. It will provide a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system connecting key districts across the metropolis,” Governor Yusuf said.
He explained that the rail service will make commuting faster and safer, reduce road congestion, and provide residents with reliable and convenient transportation. It is also expected to facilitate trade, attract investment, and create jobs, while boosting Kano’s profile as a commercial and industrial centre.
The governor assured residents that the state government would work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure the project is executed transparently and efficiently, with maximum benefits for the people of Kano.
Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for approving the project and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting federal initiatives through complementary policies and infrastructure development.
The announcement was contained in a statement released by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General of Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano. The statement emphasized that the rail project aligns with both federal and state efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and urban planning in major Nigerian cities.
The Metropolitan Rail Service is part of a broader effort by the Federal Government to modernize urban transport in Nigeria. In recent years, several states, including Lagos and Abuja, have developed rail systems to ease traffic congestion and provide efficient alternatives to road transport. Experts have noted that rail transport is environmentally friendly, reduces commuting time, and supports economic growth by linking business districts and residential areas.
Kano State, being one of the largest and most populous states in Northern Nigeria, has long struggled with traffic congestion, especially in the city centre and key commercial areas. Heavy road traffic has affected business activities, increased travel times, and contributed to air pollution. The new rail service is expected to relieve these challenges while promoting safer and faster transportation.
Urban development experts have welcomed the announcement, saying that investing in rail infrastructure can attract domestic and foreign investment, create employment, and support industrial growth. They noted that an efficient mass transit system can also improve access to education, healthcare, and other essential services for residents.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the rail project would be executed in phases, with the initial phase targeting high-traffic routes linking major commercial and residential areas. This approach is expected to provide immediate benefits to commuters and lay the groundwork for future expansion.
The state government has promised to ensure that the construction process is transparent, with regular updates to the public and engagement of local contractors and labour where possible. This is intended to create jobs for residents and promote inclusive development.
The approval of the Kano Metropolitan Rail Service is also seen as part of a wider push by the Federal Government to modernize infrastructure in Northern Nigeria. Similar projects in other states have led to improved transportation systems, reduced road accidents, and stimulated economic activity in urban areas.
Residents of Kano have expressed excitement over the announcement, describing it as a transformative project that will ease daily commuting challenges and enhance the city’s status as a major economic hub in the North. Traders, workers, and students are particularly optimistic that the rail service will reduce travel times and lower transport costs.
Commenting on the development, a local trader said, “We welcome this project. Kano has been struggling with traffic for years, and a modern rail system will make it easier for us to move goods and reach our customers on time. We hope the project is implemented quickly and professionally.”
The ₦1 trillion investment underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to improving urban transport, fostering economic growth, and supporting state-level development initiatives. Analysts believe that if well-executed, the Kano Metropolitan Rail Service could serve as a model for other Northern cities facing similar transportation challenges.
With the Federal Government’s backing and the state’s commitment to collaboration and transparency, the Kano Metropolitan Rail Service is poised to become a transformative infrastructure project, reshaping urban mobility, supporting commerce, and enhancing the overall quality of life in the state capital.
