Popular Nigerian music producer and singer, Samklef, has openly declared his support for the “City Boy Movement,” saying he is ready to donate millions of naira once the campaign begins.
Samklef made the statement in a post shared on his social media page, where he expressed strong political views and described himself as a proud “Lagos boy.”
“Politics are not for emotional kids!” he wrote. “Just like I said I will be donating millions for Jagaban once campaign start. As a Lagos boy Omo Eko city boy noni! City Boy Movement 7th Heaven Branch! Village boys will remain in the village!”
The term “Jagaban” is widely associated with Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who previously served as Governor of Lagos State and is a key political figure in the country. The “City Boy” slogan became popular during the 2023 presidential campaign, especially among supporters of Tinubu.
Samklef’s comments have since attracted mixed reactions online, with some praising him for openly supporting his preferred political movement, while others criticised the tone of his message.
Samklef, who rose to fame in the early 2010s for producing hit songs for top Nigerian artistes, has remained active on social media in recent years, often sharing strong opinions on political and social issues.
In Nigeria, it is common for entertainers and public figures to openly support political candidates and parties. During past elections, several musicians, actors and influencers publicly endorsed candidates and even performed at campaign rallies.
Lagos, often referred to as Nigeria’s commercial capital, plays a major role in national politics. The state has produced influential leaders and remains a stronghold of the ruling political structure associated with Tinubu.
The phrase “Omo Eko,” used by Samklef, is a Yoruba expression that means “child of Lagos.” It is often used by indigenes and residents to show pride in their roots and connection to the state.
While Samklef did not provide details about the structure or activities of the “City Boy Movement 7th Heaven Branch,” his message suggests plans for mobilisation and financial support when campaigns officially begin.
Following his post, social media users shared different views. Supporters of the president welcomed his declaration, describing it as bold and loyal. Critics, however, argued that politics should focus on issues affecting Nigerians rather than slogans and rivalry.
Nigeria’s political space has become increasingly active ahead of future elections, with groups already positioning themselves. Though the next general election is still some years away, conversations about governance, economic reforms and youth participation continue across the country.
