There is growing anger in Kaduna State following reports that a primary school principal in Badiko Local Government Area allegedly converted one of the school’s classrooms into a personal poultry farm.
The classroom, which was meant for teaching pupils, was reportedly used to keep chickens. The development has raised serious concerns among parents and residents about the welfare of pupils, hygiene conditions, and the quality of education in the school.
Community sources said the situation came to light after some residents noticed unusual activities around the classroom. According to them, chickens were being kept inside the room where pupils were supposed to receive lessons.
The incident has since sparked heated discussions within the community and on social media, with many calling for immediate investigation.
Parents of pupils in the school have expressed shock and disappointment over the alleged action of the principal.
One parent, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was unacceptable for a classroom to be used for poultry farming when children are already facing overcrowded learning conditions.
“Our children sit on the floor sometimes because there are not enough classrooms. Now we hear that one classroom is being used for chickens. This is not right,” the parent said.
Residents also raised concerns about hygiene and health risks. Poultry farms can produce unpleasant smells and waste, which may attract flies and other insects. Some community members fear that keeping chickens inside a classroom environment could expose pupils to infections.
They also questioned what message such action would send to young learners about discipline and proper use of public property.
The school is located in Badiko, a community in Kaduna State where many families depend on public schools for basic education. In many parts of the state, public primary schools already face challenges such as limited classrooms, shortage of teachers, and inadequate facilities.
For this reason, residents say any misuse of available space could worsen the situation.
The incident has led to calls for action by the Kaduna State Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities.
Community leaders and parents have urged the ministry to investigate the allegation and take appropriate steps if it is confirmed.
They said public school facilities are meant strictly for educational purposes and should not be used for private business.
Some education advocates also weighed in on the matter. They stressed that school leaders are expected to set good examples and protect the learning environment for pupils.
According to them, if the allegation is true, it could amount to misuse of government property and breach of professional ethics.
However, as of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the school management, the principal involved, or the Kaduna State Government addressing the allegation.
Efforts to get comments from officials were not successful.
Public primary schools in many parts of Nigeria face several challenges. These include overcrowded classrooms, poor infrastructure, lack of teaching materials, and insufficient funding.
Kaduna State has made efforts in recent years to reform its education sector, including teacher recruitment and school renovation projects. However, gaps still remain, especially in rural and semi-urban communities.
The use of a classroom for poultry farming, if confirmed, may also raise questions about monitoring and supervision in public schools. School principals are appointed to manage school resources responsibly and ensure that government property is protected.
In Nigeria, school facilities are owned by the government and are funded through public resources. They are meant to serve the interest of pupils and the community.
Misuse of such facilities can attract disciplinary measures, including suspension or removal from office, depending on the outcome of investigations.
As the controversy continues, many residents of Badiko say they are waiting for clear answers from the authorities.
Some community members have called for an inspection of the school to confirm the situation and assess the condition of other facilities.
They also want assurances that pupils are learning in a safe and healthy environment.
Education remains a sensitive issue in Kaduna State, where parents rely heavily on government schools to provide basic learning for their children.
For now, the alleged conversion of a classroom into a poultry farm has become a major talking point in the area.
