The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the recent attack on the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, in Benin City, Edo State.

The suspect, identified as Udeme Monday Stephen, was picked up after he allegedly claimed responsibility for the attack in a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Security sources said the suspect is currently in custody and will soon be charged to court.

The attack happened on February 24 during a political meeting in Benin City. Mr. Obi was attending the event alongside former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Oyegun, and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Armed men reportedly opened fire at the venue, causing panic and forcing those present to flee for safety.

Fortunately, no deaths were reported, and Mr. Obi and other political leaders escaped unharmed.

The DSS, Nigeria’s secret police responsible for internal security and intelligence, quickly began an investigation into the incident. According to a security source, the agency used forensic tools to trace online activities linked to threats made after the attack.

Shortly after the Benin attack, a man using the X handle @stevetom788 allegedly posted messages claiming responsibility. In the posts, he said Mr. Obi was lucky to have survived the Benin incident and warned that he might not be so fortunate next time.

The suspect also allegedly threatened further attacks if the former presidential candidate visited Rivers State. The messages quickly drew attention online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over rising political tension and hate speech.

A security source revealed that the DSS launched a covert operation immediately after the threats were detected. Investigators reportedly relied on digital tracking and forensic analysis to trace the account to its owner.

“The agency acted swiftly. After the threats were issued, operatives were deployed, and the suspect was arrested,” the source said.

Stephen is said to be a teacher at Jessica High School in Eliozu, located in the Umuehere Community of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. The news of his arrest has shocked residents in the area, who described him as quiet and reserved.

The DSS has not yet released an official statement, but sources confirmed that the suspect is being questioned and will face charges in court soon.

The attack on Mr. Obi has raised fresh concerns about political violence in Nigeria. Since the 2023 general elections, political activities across the country have remained tense, especially among supporters of different parties.

Mr. Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, remains a key opposition figure. His campaign attracted many young Nigerians and first-time voters. Though he did not win the election, he continues to play an active role in national discussions and political events.

Chief John Oyegun, who was also present at the Benin meeting, is a respected political leader and former national chairman of the APC. The African Democratic Congress (ADC), whose members attended the meeting, is another opposition party seeking to build stronger alliances ahead of future elections.

In recent years, the DSS has been involved in investigating threats to national security, including cyber-related crimes and online incitement. The agency’s quick response in this case shows the growing role of digital surveillance in tackling modern security challenges.

Civil society groups have also called for political tolerance and responsible speech online. They warn that inflammatory statements on social media can encourage violence and deepen division among citizens.

Residents of Benin City said the February 24 attack caused fear in the community. Some called on security agencies to increase patrols and intelligence gathering, especially during political gatherings.

As the investigation continues, many Nigerians are watching closely to see how the case will be handled in court. Legal experts say prosecuting individuals who make violent threats online will send a strong message that such behaviour will not be tolerated.

For now, Mr. Obi and other leaders have continued their activities, though with increased security presence at public events. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria’s democracy and the need for peaceful political engagement.
