The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with the government of Mexico to promote cultural exchange and expand tourism opportunities between both regions.

Sanwo-Olu made the statement on Monday during a courtesy visit by the Mexican Ambassador to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda Ortiz. The ambassador was accompanied by the Honorary Consul of Mexico in Lagos, Abiodun Otunola.

The meeting took place at Lagos House in Ikeja, the official office of the governor.

During the visit, the governor welcomed the decision by the Mexican government to open an honorary consulate in Lagos, describing it as an important step toward strengthening relations between Nigeria and Mexico.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the new consulate will help improve cooperation between both countries and create opportunities for collaboration in several sectors.

“We appreciate the decision of the Mexican government to open an honorary consulate in Lagos, which will further strengthen our bilateral relationship and deepen cooperation between our two countries,” the governor said.

He explained that such diplomatic presence would make it easier for businesses, cultural organisations and government institutions to connect and develop partnerships.

“This engagement presents an opportunity for us to share ideas, collaborate and explore areas that will benefit our people and strengthen our economic and cultural ties,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos and Mexico share similarities in culture, music, art and tourism potential.

He said collaboration between both sides could help promote tourism development and cultural exchange programmes.

Tourism has become an important part of economic development in many countries. Governments often use cultural festivals, historical attractions and entertainment industries to attract visitors and boost revenue.

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital and one of Africa’s largest cities, is already known for its vibrant entertainment industry, beaches, cultural festivals and nightlife.

The state hosts several cultural events each year, including music festivals, art exhibitions and film gatherings that attract visitors from within and outside Nigeria.

Sanwo-Olu said partnerships with countries like Mexico could help expand these opportunities and increase international interest in Lagos as a tourist destination.

He added that collaboration could also include exchanges in sports, entertainment and cultural activities.

Beyond tourism and culture, Sanwo-Olu said Lagos is interested in building stronger economic partnerships with international partners.

He explained that the state government is focused on creating an environment that attracts investors from around the world.

According to him, Lagos remains a major economic hub not only in Nigeria but also in the West African region.

With a population estimated at more than 20 million people, Lagos has one of the largest consumer markets in Africa.

The city is home to major financial institutions, industries, ports and international companies.

Sanwo-Olu said that deeper cooperation with Mexico could help increase trade, encourage investment and expand economic activities between businesses in both regions.

He added that Lagos also aims to serve as a gateway for foreign investors seeking access to the West African market.

“Lagos is committed to creating an enabling environment that will make the state more attractive to investors and tourists,” he said.

Diplomatic missions such as embassies and consulates play an important role in supporting trade, tourism and cultural relations between countries.

They also assist citizens abroad and help promote business connections between companies in different nations.

Ortiz said the Mexican government plans to continue exploring areas where both countries can work together for mutual benefit.

Relations between Nigeria and Mexico have grown gradually over the years through diplomatic cooperation and trade discussions.

Both countries are among the largest economies in their regions, with Nigeria playing a major role in West Africa while Mexico is one of the leading economies in Latin America.
