Two soldiers have reportedly been killed during a violent clash between youths from two communities in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident, which has raised tension in the area, occurred during a confrontation between security personnel and youths from Isabang and Alesi communities.

Police authorities say calm has now been restored after security personnel were deployed to the affected communities.

Sources in the area said the crisis started on March 11 after a miner identified as Ibrahim Musa was allegedly attacked by youths at a village checkpoint.

According to community sources, Musa was transporting minerals from a mining site when he was stopped by some youths.

During the encounter, he was reportedly beaten and his minerals were seized.

The miner was said to have later reported the incident to soldiers stationed at the 245 Battalion located at Edor Barracks in Ochon, near Jenifer Etuh’s Hospital.

After receiving the report, the soldiers reportedly moved into the forest area to arrest those believed to be responsible for the attack.

However, the operation soon turned violent when youths in the area allegedly resisted the attempt to make arrests.

Local sources said the youths blocked the road leading into the forest where the soldiers were heading.

This led to a confrontation between the youths and the troops.

Witnesses said the situation quickly escalated into violence.

During the clash, the soldiers reportedly fired gunshots in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

The gunfire resulted in injuries to at least four persons.

Two of the injured victims were identified as Christopher Agara, 27, and Ogobi Egbe, 30.

Sources said two other injured persons were taken away by local residents for treatment using traditional medicine.

However, during the confrontation, two soldiers were also reportedly killed.

The circumstances surrounding their deaths were still unclear at the time of reporting.

The incident was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Police Command, Sunday Eitokpah.

Speaking in Calabar on Friday, the police spokesperson said security personnel had been deployed to the area to restore peace.

He stated that the situation had been brought under control.

“We deployed our personnel and tactical teams to the area, and normalcy has been restored,” he said.

The police did not provide further details about the soldiers who were killed or the circumstances of their deaths.

Residents of the affected communities said the incident created fear among villagers.

Many people reportedly stayed indoors following the violence.

Community members expressed concern that the situation could escalate if not properly handled by authorities.

Local leaders are said to be working with security agencies to calm tensions between the communities and prevent further clashes.

Obubra Local Government Area is known to have several natural mineral deposits, and mining activities take place in some parts of the area.

In many rural communities across Nigeria, disputes sometimes arise over access to mineral resources and the control of mining activities.

Local checkpoints are also common in some communities, where youths attempt to monitor movements or collect informal fees from miners and transporters.

Such practices have occasionally led to conflicts between miners, community youths and security agencies.

In some cases, security forces are called in to restore order, but misunderstandings between soldiers and residents can worsen already tense situations.

Cross River State, located in Nigeria’s South-South region, has generally been regarded as relatively peaceful compared to some other parts of the country.

However, community disputes and youth clashes still occur in some rural areas.

Following the incident, some residents have called on authorities to carry out a proper investigation into the events that led to the deaths of the soldiers and the injuries to villagers.
