The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 18 suspects following a violent clash between youths in Ilemba Hausa, a community in the Ojo area of Lagos.
The incident, which caused panic among residents, was widely shared on social media after videos surfaced showing groups of young men throwing stones and other dangerous objects at one another. The clash quickly drew public attention, with many expressing concern over safety in the area.
Confirming the development, the police spokesperson, Adebisi Abimbola, said 18 individuals had been taken into custody in connection with the violence.
“Eighteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the clash and are currently in police custody,” she stated.
According to her, security operatives moved swiftly to contain the situation and prevent further escalation. Senior officers were also deployed to the community to supervise operations and ensure peace was restored.
Residents of Ilemba Hausa reported that the clash created tension in the area, forcing some people to remain indoors while others fled temporarily to safer locations.
The police said calm has now returned to the area, with officers still present to maintain order and prevent any fresh outbreak of violence.
Abimbola assured residents that the command is committed to protecting lives and property and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
She also called on members of the public to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements or activities.
“Our officers are on ground to maintain a visible presence and ensure sustained peace,” she said.
In the aftermath of the clash, reports circulated online claiming that two police officers, including a Divisional Police Officer, were killed during a related incident in Iyana Ojo.
However, the police have dismissed these claims as false and misleading.
In a statement shared on social media, Abimbola clarified that no police personnel or civilians lost their lives in the incident.
She added that some of the videos being shared online were not connected to the clash in Ilemba Hausa and should not be treated as credible information.
The police warned that spreading unverified information could create unnecessary fear and panic among residents.
The incident has once again highlighted the role of social media in spreading information during emergencies. While platforms can help raise awareness, they can also spread false or outdated content that worsens situations.
Security experts have repeatedly advised the public to verify information from trusted and official sources before sharing.
Abimbola stressed this point, urging Nigerians to act responsibly online.
“Members of the public should always verify information before sharing, especially during security incidents,” she said.
Clashes involving youths are not new in parts of Lagos, particularly in densely populated areas. Such incidents are often linked to disputes over territory, local leadership, or personal disagreements that escalate quickly.
In communities like Ojo, which serve as busy residential and commercial hubs, tensions can rise due to population pressure and limited resources.
Authorities have been working to address these issues through community policing and engagement with local leaders. However, occasional outbreaks of violence still occur.
The Lagos State Police Command has in recent years increased its presence in areas considered vulnerable to unrest. Regular patrols, rapid response units, and collaboration with community leaders are part of efforts to improve security.
The arrest of the 18 suspects is seen as part of these efforts to ensure that those involved in violence are held accountable.
Residents have welcomed the quick response by the police but also called for long-term solutions to prevent future clashes.
Some community members said there is a need for more youth engagement programmes, job opportunities, and conflict resolution initiatives to address the root causes of such violence.
Community leaders in Ilemba Hausa have also appealed for calm, urging young people to avoid actions that could disrupt peace in the area.
They highlighted the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving disputes rather than resorting to violence.
The police have reiterated that they will not tolerate any form of lawlessness and will continue to enforce the law across the state.
As investigations continue, the authorities are expected to determine the exact cause of the clash and whether more arrests will be made.
For now, the situation in Ilemba Hausa remains calm, with security personnel maintaining a strong presence to reassure residents.
