The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Kabiru Nuhu, for allegedly setting his father on fire in Kazaure Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which has shocked residents of the community, occurred in the early hours of April 1, 2026, at about 6:30 am in Magama Quarters, Kazaure town.
Confirming the development on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Shi’isu Adam, said preliminary investigations showed that the suspect poured a substance believed to be petrol on his 60-year-old father and set him ablaze.
According to him, the police received a distress call from a resident, Lokon Malamai, reporting the incident. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“When our men arrived, the victim was found in critical condition, while the suspect also had fresh burns and injuries on his forehead, arms, and toes,” Adam said.
The injured man was quickly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, he later died due to the severity of his injuries.
Police authorities confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody and will be charged with patricide, the killing of one’s father. He is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Haruna Yahaya, strongly condemned the act and described it as disturbing and unacceptable.
“We are working to establish the motive behind the attack, and justice will be served,” the police commissioner said.
He also called on residents of the state to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.
The tragic incident has raised concerns about rising cases of domestic violence and family disputes in parts of the country. In recent years, security agencies and civil society groups have warned about the dangers of unresolved family conflicts, especially when they escalate into violence.
Experts say many such incidents often stem from long-standing disagreements, financial pressures, mental health challenges, or substance abuse. However, police authorities have not yet confirmed the motive behind this particular case.
Community members in Kazaure have expressed shock over the development, describing it as unusual and deeply troubling. Some residents said the incident has left many people in fear and disbelief, as such acts of violence within families are rare in the area.
The police have urged members of the public to always report early signs of domestic violence or threats to life to the nearest security agency. They stressed that timely intervention can help prevent tragedies.
Commissioner Yahaya also advised families to seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes, including mediation through community leaders, religious institutions, and local authorities.
“Violence is never the answer to any disagreement. We encourage people to speak up and seek help before situations get out of control,” he added.
This incident adds to a growing list of violent crimes being investigated by law enforcement agencies across Nigeria. While authorities continue to intensify efforts to maintain peace and security, they have repeatedly called on citizens to play an active role by sharing useful information and reporting suspicious activities.
