Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has officially dissolved his cabinet ahead of the swearing-in of his successor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on November 12, 2024.
The announcement marks the final act of Obaseki’s administration, which began on November 12, 2016, and is set to end after eight years in office.
Obaseki’s decision came shortly after a valedictory session held at the Government House in Benin, where members of the State Executive Council (SEC) gathered for their final meeting.
Obaseki expressed his gratitude to the outgoing cabinet members for their support in realizing his administration’s vision of making Edo State “great again.”
The motion to dissolve the cabinet was moved by Obaseki’s deputy, Godwin Omobayo, and seconded by the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Osilama Okuofu.
In his remarks at the valedictory session, Governor Obaseki praised the collective efforts of the cabinet in executing policies aimed at improving the state’s economy, education, and infrastructure.
He also thanked the people of Edo State for their support and collaboration throughout his tenure. “Your prayers, support, and cooperation have made my time in office a fulfilling experience,” he stated.
The valedictory session was an emotional one, with cabinet members taking turns to acknowledge Obaseki’s leadership and contributions to the state.
The outgoing commissioners and heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) also presented awards and gifts to honor the governor for his leadership.
“The opportunity to serve Edo people is something I will always cherish,” said one of the commissioners, who was visibly emotional as he spoke about his time working with the governor.
The event ended with a dinner in honor of Governor Obaseki, marking the end of an era in Edo State politics.
Obaseki’s tenure will officially come to a close on November 12, 2024, the same day Senator Okpebholo, who is from the All Progressives Congress (APC), will take the oath of office as the new governor.
The dissolution of the cabinet is a customary step in preparing for the transition of power, ensuring that the incoming administration can begin with a clean slate.
The outgoing governor’s relationship with his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, was marked by tension, especially during the 2020 gubernatorial election when Obaseki ran for re-election on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform after a fallout with the APC.
Despite political challenges, Obaseki managed to implement several reforms aimed at boosting the state’s economic standing, particularly in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, and education.
The event also highlighted the strong working relationship between Obaseki and his cabinet members, many of whom expressed their admiration for his leadership.
“The governor’s leadership style has been transformative for Edo State,” said one cabinet member during the valedictory session. “It has been a privilege to serve under his guidance.”
With the dissolution of the cabinet, attention now turns to the plans and policies of Senator Okpebholo as he prepares to take the reins of power.
