The political tension within Nigeria’s main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), took a sharp turn as the camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hit back at Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.

Wike had recently dismissed Atiku’s chances of securing the PDP ticket in the 2027 presidential election, predicting that the party would seek fresh leadership.

In a scathing response, Atiku’s special assistant on media, Abdul Rasheeth, labeled Wike as “a joker,” accusing him of repeatedly working against Atiku’s interests within the party.

“Wike has done everything possible to hinder Atiku’s progress in the PDP,” Rasheeth claimed.

He added that Wike attempted to prevent Atiku’s candidacy in the 2019 elections and even contested against him in 2023, only to lose.

“Now he wants to stop him again in 2027,” Rasheeth remarked.

He also took a jab at Wike, saying, “The 40-year whisky is a joker.”

Wike’s comments stirred up significant reactions within the PDP.

The former governor of Rivers State had stated that Atiku’s previous blueprint had been rejected by Nigerians in the 2023 elections, indicating that the party should not rely on one individual for leadership.

Wike’s remarks, which he made during a live media parley, included strong criticism of Atiku’s influence within the party.

“Did he not present it before Nigerians?” Wike asked, referring to Atiku’s 2023 campaign.

“Did Nigerians choose him?” he questioned.

“He is lobbying for another chance, but the chance will not be there,” Wike said emphatically.

According to Wike, relying on one person for years on end is detrimental to the party and the country.

In his comparison, he referenced American politics, saying that leaders in the U.S. make decisions based on the best interests of their country, and that Nigeria should do the same.

He continued, “You presented your blueprint in 2023; Nigerians heard you clearly and said thank you, but it will not work. We will not support you.”

Wike’s remarks were not the first time he clashed with Atiku’s camp.

Political observers say that tensions between the two intensified after the 2023 election, where Wike’s G5 governors formed an opposition faction within the PDP.

The internal conflict split the party, and accusations flew from both sides about betrayal and unkept promises.

Wike, however, insists his stance is not personal but is based on his belief that the party must evolve to remain relevant in the country’s changing political landscape.

Atiku’s camp has dismissed Wike’s advice, describing it as an attempt to undermine Atiku’s political future.

They also argue that Wike’s criticisms do not reflect the views of the broader PDP membership.

An Atiku ally remarked, “Wike’s prediction is nothing but a fantasy.”
