President Joe Biden has made a pivotal decision to allow Ukraine to strike targets within Russian territory using powerful American long-range missiles.

The move marks a significant escalation in the ongoing war, with North Korean troops reportedly joining Russian forces in the southern region of Kursk.

A senior US official revealed that Biden’s approval of the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) follows months of heated deliberation within his administration.

Some officials had opposed the decision, fearing it could further escalate the conflict and strain the United States’ stockpile of these advanced weapons.

The ATACMS, known for their precision and destructive power, were initially provided to Ukraine earlier this year but were restricted to use within Ukrainian territory.

This restriction frustrated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who repeatedly pressed the US to permit strikes on Russian soil.

During a September meeting at the White House, Zelensky presented Biden with a detailed list of targets inside Russia as part of his “victory plan.”

“These targets are crucial for crippling Russia’s military capacity and turning the tide of the war,” Zelensky argued, according to sources familiar with the discussion.

While Biden initially refrained from granting approval, the recent deployment of North Korean troops to assist Russia appears to have tipped the scales.

The involvement of thousands of North Korean soldiers in Kursk has raised alarm in Washington and Kyiv.

Kursk, a southern Russian region where Ukraine launched a surprise counteroffensive this summer, is now a focal point of Russia’s military efforts.

The deployment of North Korean troops is widely viewed as an effort to bolster Russia’s campaign and reclaim lost territory.

Analysts warn that the addition of North Korean forces could signal a dangerous new phase in the war.

One US defense official described the situation as “deeply concerning,” adding, “This alliance shows just how far Russia is willing to go to secure its objectives.”

The authorization of ATACMS for strikes inside Russia signals a shift in US policy nearly three years into the war.

Initially, the Biden administration had been hesitant to provide such powerful weapons, citing concerns about readiness and the potential for escalation.

The decision reflects the growing recognition that Ukraine needs more advanced capabilities to counter Russia’s sustained aggression.

The Kremlin has yet to comment on Biden’s decision, but experts believe it could lead to heightened hostilities.

There are also concerns about the depletion of ATACMS stockpiles, as the missiles require complex components and significant time to produce.

Nevertheless, Ukraine appears determined to seize the opportunity.

Zelensky remains confident that the use of ATACMS within Russia will boost his military’s efforts and hasten the war’s end.

“This is a defining moment,” Zelensky reportedly told his aides. “We now have the tools to strike at the heart of the aggressor.”
