The Nigerian president is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit. These talks are crucial for advancing Nigeria’s ongoing socio-economic reforms.

The 2024 G20 summit is being hosted by Brazil, under the leadership of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has held the rotating presidency since December 2023.

The G20 presidency will end for Brazil on November 30, 2024.

President Tinubu’s invitation to the summit came after Carlos Areias, the Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, delivered an official invitation to the Nigerian president on August 29.

This invitation followed a formal meeting where the Ambassador presented his Letter of Credence to Tinubu.

The G20 summit will bring together leaders from 19 countries, including major economies like Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, and the United States.

The summit will also host representatives from invited international organizations like the African Union and the European Union.

As the summit gathers some of the world’s most influential leaders, Nigeria’s role in global economic reform will be at the forefront of Tinubu’s participation.

“A Momentous Opportunity for Africa”

In an exclusive statement to the press before his departure, Tinubu emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s participation in the summit.

He highlighted that the summit is a critical opportunity for African nations to contribute to the global conversation on sustainable development.

“It is a great honor to represent Nigeria and Africa at this global gathering,” Tinubu said.

“The summit is not just an opportunity to discuss economic issues but also to forge partnerships that will benefit our continent in the long term. We must work together to ensure that our voices are heard on issues like climate change, sustainable development, and reforming global governance.”

The president’s message resonated with his government’s ongoing efforts to foster stronger international ties, particularly with countries in the Global South.

The Nigerian delegation is expected to push for more inclusive global policies that address the unique challenges faced by African nations.

A Platform for Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Reforms

Aside from his participation in the main summit discussions, Tinubu is also using this event as a platform to advance Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms.

In particular, Nigeria’s foreign policy agenda under Tinubu’s administration has focused on improving economic stability, encouraging foreign investments, and tackling security issues.

During the summit, Nigeria will advocate for international support to combat insecurity, particularly in the Sahel region, and for cooperation on tackling climate change.

The country’s role in the global economy is expected to be a key area of discussion during the summit, with Tinubu aiming to showcase Nigeria’s potential as a growing economic power in Africa.

Brazil’s G20 Presidency and Global Leadership

Brazil’s leadership of the G20 has emphasized sustainability and inclusivity, aiming to address both global economic recovery and climate change challenges.

Under President Lula da Silva’s guidance, Brazil has led the charge for more equitable global policies and has called for more collaboration between developing nations.

As President Tinubu joins other world leaders, his participation will be vital in strengthening Nigeria’s position in global economic discussions.
