“Growing up, I listened to emcees who were very lyrical, like Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, 2Pac, Biggie, and the rest,” he said.

“I had that Western influence in my music. At the start, I was rapping in English because I wanted to sound like them.”

However, Phyno realized that to build a successful career, he needed to differentiate himself.

“When I got to a point where I had to make a career out of this, I asked myself, What am I going to sell to the world?”

Phyno said he came to a profound realization.

“If I go to the UK, will I sell English to them? They own the English language. If I go to America, I can’t sell what they already have. But if I sell Igbo to them, it’s unique. That’s my strength.”

    Cultural Roots Shaped His Music

Phyno credits his upbringing in a highlife-influenced environment as a major factor in shaping his sound.

“I grew up in a neighbourhood that was heavily influenced by highlife music,” he explained.

“That influence is in my music and art today. I make sure I incorporate it because it’s part of who I am.”
