UK Army Chief Says, We’re Ready to Fight Putin Tonight

    Share

In a bold statement on Thursday, Rob Magowan, the Deputy Chief of the British Defense Staff, declared that Britain’s military is ready to face Russian forces immediately if Vladimir Putin escalates the conflict in Eastern Europe.

“If the British Army was asked to fight tonight, it would fight tonight,” Magowan told the House of Commons defense committee.

His statement came in response to a question about Britain’s readiness to defend Eastern European NATO allies in the event of a Russian invasion.

Magowan’s words sent a clear message to both NATO members and Russia: the UK is prepared to meet any aggression with force.

Magowan’s comments reflect growing anxiety among Eastern European countries following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Countries like Latvia and Estonia, both NATO members, have closely watched Russia’s movements, fearful that they could be next.

Finland, which borders Russia, also raised alarms this week about potential sabotage of critical infrastructure.

Magowan emphasized the urgency of preparedness, stressing that an attack on one NATO member is considered an attack on all, under the alliance’s collective defense agreement.

“This is the principle of NATO: if the Russians invade any NATO country, we will stand ready to defend them,” Magowan said.

    A Historic Military Decline

Despite Magowan’s confident assertions, there are serious concerns about the current state of the UK military.

Britain’s army is at its smallest size in centuries, a fact that was highlighted just last month when U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey admitted that the state of the armed forces was “far worse than we thought.”

Since the summer, Healey has overseen a strategic defense review, which has led to significant cuts.

These include the decision to axe five warships and a dozen military helicopters and drones, part of the government’s cost-cutting measures.

The review has raised questions about the UK’s ability to effectively respond to a major military escalation in Europe.

Magowan acknowledged these concerns but reassured MPs that the UK still has a range of operational strengths and could deploy quickly.

“There are risks, of course, but we have operational strengths that make us capable of defending NATO’s eastern flank,” he said.

    Challenges of Maintaining Military Strength

The cuts to the British military have led to widespread concern about the long-term sustainability of the armed forces.

Magowan has repeatedly called for “more lethality” in the UK’s defense capabilities, noting that the military must be ready to confront increasingly sophisticated threats.

This comes as NATO members work to bolster their collective defense against Russian aggression, especially in the wake of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
