The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has applauded the resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery, describing it as a crucial step in addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges.
In a statement signed by NUPENG President Prince Williams Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale, the union praised the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for the milestone.
They congratulated NNPCL’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari, and the management team for successfully re-streaming the refinery after years of inactivity.
“The commencement of crude oil processing and the dispatch of petroleum products is a landmark achievement,” the statement read.
According to NUPENG, this development aligns with the aspirations of Nigerian workers and citizens for energy independence and economic stability.
The Port Harcourt Refinery, once plagued by operational challenges, is now back on stream, signaling hope for improved fuel supply in Nigeria.
NUPENG commended the dedication and resilience of the team that spearheaded the refinery’s rehabilitation.
“Your commitment, despite numerous challenges, reflects the highest standards of professionalism and determination,” the union leaders noted.
The achievement of over 16 million man-hours without a single loss-time injury was also highlighted as a significant accomplishment.
“This reflects meticulous planning and hard work, which brings pride to our union members,” they added.
NUPENG also recognized the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in facilitating the refinery’s revival.
They acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the NNPCL Board of Directors, staff, and contractors in achieving this feat.
“This accomplishment is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved through collective effort and shared commitment to national progress,” the statement emphasized.
The resumption of production at the refinery includes the loading of critical products such as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and Household Kerosene (HHK).
NUPENG believes this progress will alleviate hardship for workers and citizens while fostering economic stability.
“The refinery’s success stands as a beacon of hope and reinforces our optimism for the rehabilitation of Warri and Kaduna refineries,” the union said.
They expressed confidence that these projects would soon follow suit, further easing Nigeria’s energy burden.
The union’s leaders stressed the importance of NNPCL delivering on these expectations under Kyari’s leadership.
“Once more, congratulations to you and your team on this transformative achievement,” they concluded.
The refinery’s revival marks a turning point in Nigeria’s quest for energy self-sufficiency.
For years, the Port Harcourt Refinery had been a symbol of Nigeria’s struggling oil sector.
Its rehabilitation is now seen as a major boost for the nation’s economy.
Energy analysts say the refinery’s return to operation will reduce dependence on imported fuel.
This, in turn, could help stabilize fuel prices and improve availability across the country.
In recent years, Nigerians have faced recurring fuel shortages and price hikes.
The refinery’s revival offers hope for relief from these challenges.
However, experts caution that the road to full energy independence remains long.
They argue that the success of the Port Harcourt Refinery must be sustained and replicated at other facilities.
NUPENG’s optimism is shared by many stakeholders in the oil and gas sector.
The union’s support underscores the significance of collective efforts in achieving national goals.
President Tinubu’s administration has also been keen on revitalizing Nigeria’s refineries.
His support for the Port Harcourt project is seen as a step in the right direction.
Observers believe the president’s backing will be crucial for future projects.
For now, the spotlight is on NNPCL and its ability to maintain the momentum.
