In a monumental step for the Nigerian legal profession, the Body of Benchers has announced plans to call 9,000 young lawyers to the Bar in 2025.

This declaration was made by the Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, during the inauguration of a new Office Annex in Abuja on Friday.

The event marked a significant milestone for the legal profession and underscored the importance of collaboration between government arms in fostering institutional growth.

Awomolo noted that the upcoming Call to Bar will add to the more than 140,000 Nigerians already inducted as Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“This will be a historic moment for us,” Awomolo declared.

He emphasized that the Body of Benchers plays a critical role in uniting Nigerians from all geo-political zones through their induction into the legal profession.

Awomolo highlighted the infrastructural support provided by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, which has greatly enhanced the operations of the Body of Benchers.

He described the intervention as an act of goodwill that should be commended, dismissing claims that such support compromises the judiciary’s independence.

“No arm of government is so sufficiently endowed to perform its constitutional functions without assistance from others,” Awomolo explained.

He argued that the constitution itself envisages collaboration among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches for the nation’s progress.

“It does not amount to interference but is an example of the cooperation our constitution requires,” he added.

Awomolo described Wike’s efforts as “historical” and praised his unwavering commitment to the judiciary.

The Vice Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, echoed these sentiments.

Justice Ariwoola, who is also the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, decorated Wike with the emblem of the Body of Benchers and presented him with a plaque in recognition of his contributions.

    The accolades didn’t stop there.

He described Wike as a dependable public servant whose efforts inspire hope.

“Thank you for the respect that you have shown to the judiciary,” he added.

    Historic Infrastructure for Legal Excellence

The construction of the new Office Annex marks a turning point for the Body of Benchers.

Awomolo said the development symbolizes the continuous growth of Nigeria’s legal profession.

“This project is a testament to the support we have received from the executive arm of government,” he noted.

The new annex will provide state-of-the-art facilities to enhance the administrative efficiency of the Body of Benchers.

Awomolo expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and Wike for their commitment to strengthening the legal profession.

As the legal profession prepares to welcome 9,000 new barristers, the Body of Benchers has once again affirmed its role in promoting unity and professionalism.

With continuous support from government partners, the institution is poised for even greater achievements.

The call to Bar ceremony in 2025 is set to be a landmark event, reflecting the enduring legacy of collaboration and dedication to justice in Nigeria.

“This is more than just a number; it’s about fostering a stronger, united Nigeria through the law,” Awomolo concluded.
