NCAA Vows Sanctions for Airlines Over Flight Delays

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to airlines over persistent flight delays, especially as the holiday travel season begins.

Head of Consumer Protection at the NCAA, Michael Achimugu, made this declaration during a public awareness campaign in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Saturday.

Achimugu emphasized the agency’s commitment to holding airlines accountable while educating passengers about their rights.

Achimugu highlighted the increasing number of flight disruptions during the festive period, calling for better awareness among travelers.

“We’re now in the high travel season in aviation, and as you know, there’s been a lot of flight disruptions as well as a lot of complaints,” he said.

He pointed out that many complaints stem from passengers’ lack of knowledge about their rights and responsibilities.

“Our duty at NCAA is to sensitize our passengers,” Achimugu stated.

He added, “We must protect both the passenger and the airline.”

The NCAA has made it clear that airlines found guilty of unnecessary delays will face penalties.

Achimugu assured the public that the agency will enforce regulations to ensure airlines meet their obligations to passengers.

He did not provide specific details about the sanctions but stressed the importance of compliance by all operators.

“The NCAA is committed to ensuring fairness,” he remarked, urging airlines to improve their service delivery.

Flight delays have been a long-standing issue in Nigeria’s aviation industry, causing frustration among passengers.

During the holiday season, the problem is often exacerbated by increased demand for air travel.

In many cases, passengers are left stranded without adequate explanations or alternatives from airlines.

This has led to growing discontent and calls for stricter oversight by regulatory authorities.

The NCAA’s road walk in Port Harcourt aimed to bridge the gap between passengers and the aviation industry.

Officials distributed flyers and engaged travelers in discussions about their rights.

Key topics included compensation for delays, access to alternative flights, and guidelines for handling lost luggage.

Achimugu reiterated that passengers have the right to hold airlines accountable for poor service.

“We want passengers to know they can demand better treatment,” he said.

While the NCAA focuses on passenger rights, airlines are being reminded of their responsibilities.

Achimugu called on operators to address the root causes of delays, such as operational inefficiencies and poor communication.

He warned that repeated infractions could result in severe consequences for airlines.

“Every airline must do its part to ensure smooth operations during this period,” he emphasized.

Achimugu also stressed the need for collaboration between passengers, airlines, and regulatory bodies.

He urged travelers to be patient and cooperative while insisting on their rights when necessary.

“Everyone has a role to play in improving the aviation experience,” he said.

He also encouraged passengers to report any incidents of neglect or misconduct by airlines to the NCAA.
