In a striking revelation on Monday, Paul Ibe, the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), hinted that both Atiku and Peter Obi have learned vital lessons from the 2023 election and are now open to the possibility of a political merger ahead of the 2027 elections. Ibe, speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, revealed that the two leaders are determined to work together to oust the current administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which they describe as “incompetent and clueless.”

Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, despite coming from different political parties, shared a common goal during the 2023 election: challenging the APC’s Bola Tinubu, who ultimately won the presidency. Together, Atiku and Obi garnered more than 12 million votes. However, Tinubu, the APC candidate, triumphed with over eight million votes, securing a narrow victory.

But according to Ibe, the 2023 election has provided a harsh lesson for both leaders. He emphasized that both Atiku and Obi now realize the need for unity to effectively challenge the ruling government. “Nigerians deserve better than what they are getting. It’s never been this bad in this country and there is no hope,” Ibe said, echoing the frustrations of many Nigerians who feel left behind by the current administration.

Ibe stated that discussions are already underway between the two parties, with both Atiku and Obi committed to working together in future elections. He expressed confidence that “lessons have been learned” from the 2023 experience, where division between the two camps might have cost them a chance to defeat the APC.

Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and a long-time political heavyweight in the PDP, has been vocal in calling for opposition parties to unite. Ibe confirmed that Atiku has consistently promoted the idea of cooperation among opposition groups as the only way to break the APC’s grip on power. According to Ibe, both Atiku and Obi now fully understand the importance of unity.

“The truth of the matter is that Atiku Abubakar has promoted opposition parties to work together, to come together; that is the only way they can kick out this incompetent and clueless government,” Ibe stated, clearly directing criticism at the APC leadership. “And I believe that discussions have been going on,” he added.

Although the details of the merger talks remain unclear, it is evident that both leaders are committed to leaving behind past mistakes. Ibe made it clear that, moving forward, Atiku and Obi would no longer allow their rivalry to hinder their collective political ambitions.

One of the key questions raised during the interview was whether Atiku Abubakar would be willing to step down for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential race. While Ibe did not provide a clear answer, he hinted that “all options are on the table” as the discussions continue. This statement raises the possibility of a power-sharing arrangement or another form of political compromise between the two leaders.

Peter Obi, who was once a key member of the PDP, left the party before the 2023 election after failing to secure the presidential ticket. He went on to contest under the banner of the Labour Party (LP), a decision that many analysts believe divided the opposition vote. If Atiku and Obi unite, it is believed that they could form a formidable force that might be able to challenge the APC effectively in 2027.

It remains unclear whether Obi would be willing to give way for Atiku to run again in 2027, but the possibility of collaboration between the two, including a potential ticket-sharing arrangement, is seen as a major political development.

Ibe also emphasised the deteriorating state of Nigeria’s political and economic situation under the APC government, a sentiment shared by many Nigerians who have grown disillusioned with the current leadership. The country has faced severe challenges, including rising inflation, insecurity, and a lack of basic infrastructure. For many, the hope is that a united opposition can bring about meaningful change.

“There is no hope,” Ibe said, reflecting the deep frustration many Nigerians feel about the direction the country has taken since the 2023 elections. Both Atiku and Obi, once bitter rivals, appear to be putting their differences aside for the greater good of the nation.
