    20 Dead, 11 Rescued in Boat Mishap

    A devastating boat accident in Benue State has left at least 20 people dead, with 11 others rescued by local authorities.

    The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, December 14, in the Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

    The boat, carrying passengers from Nasarawa State, capsized while on its way back from Ocholonya market in Agatu.

    The victims were reportedly heading to their communities in Doma, Nasarawa State, when the tragedy struck.

    The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Sewuese Anene, provided an update on the situation.

    Anene confirmed that rescue efforts were still underway as of Sunday, December 15.

    “At least 11 people have been rescued, while 20 bodies have been recovered,” the police spokesperson said.

    According to the Agatu Local Government Chairman, Mr. Melvin James, the victims were mostly from Nasarawa State.

    He expressed shock over the tragedy and extended his condolences to the affected families.

    James described the incident as “heartbreaking” and offered his support to the victims’ loved ones.

    “It’s true that there was a boat mishap yesterday, and the people came to Ocholonya market in Agatu,” James said.

    He explained that the boat was returning to Nasarawa State when it capsized.

    The boat was reportedly en route to the villages of Apochi and Odenyi in Doma, Nasarawa State, when disaster struck.

    James said he had been in contact with officials from the Nigerian Navy for assistance.

    “I am trying to get my colleague from Nasarawa State to see how we can go there to visit the families and console them,” James said.

    The cause of the boat’s capsizing is still unknown, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

    Local residents described the scene as chaotic, with many unable to reach the victims due to the treacherous conditions on the river.

    “People were screaming for help, but the current was too strong,” a local witness said.

    Authorities have urged members of the public to remain cautious while traveling on waterways in the area.

    The police have assured the public that they will continue to search for any missing persons.

    “We are doing everything we can to ensure that all victims are accounted for,” SP Anene stated.

    Boat accidents have been a recurring issue in parts of Nigeria, where many rely on water transport for commuting.

    In 2020, a similar boat mishap in neighboring Kwara State claimed the lives of several people, raising concerns about safety standards.
