Ogun Airport Begins Charter Flights, Eyes Full Operation in January 2025

    Share

Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport, located along the Ilisan-Iperu axis of Ogun State, has officially commenced charter flights, marking a major step toward the airport’s full operation.

The government aims to begin scheduled domestic flights in January or February 2025, with ValueJet Airline already positioned to start services.

Efforts are also underway to engage more airlines as discussions continue to secure final approval from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The airport has secured regulatory approval to begin non-scheduled charter flights, which is seen as a significant development in its journey toward becoming a full-fledged international and domestic airport.

Authorities are optimistic that, with the regulatory groundwork laid, the airport will soon serve as a key hub for both passenger and cargo flights, especially benefiting the state’s agricultural industry.

Engr. Ade Akinsanya, Ogun State’s Commissioner for Works, shared his excitement, saying, “We are ready to go once we get final approval. We have approval for charter flights, and we are confident that scheduled flights will begin soon.”

    World-Class Infrastructure

The Gateway airport has been recognized as a world-standard facility by officials from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), who recently visited the site.

During their visit, the agencies expressed their satisfaction with the airport’s infrastructure, calling it a source of pride for Ogun State.

“The airport has set a benchmark for the entire country, and we are proud of the progress made so far,” Engr. Akinsanya said.

The airport’s runway, which is currently the longest in Nigeria, measures 3.4 kilometers, with a 600-meter safety zone, making it a total of 4 kilometers in length. This will allow for the safe and efficient operation of large aircraft.

The permanent Control Tower, a state-of-the-art five-storey building, is fully operational, and the airport boasts a modern fire station as well.

The airport is not only focused on passenger services but also on leveraging Ogun State’s agricultural potential. The state is positioning the airport as a hub for agro-cargo activities, which will support the transportation of agricultural products and goods to local and international markets.

“This is an important project that will stand the test of time,” said Engr. Gbenga Dairo, the Commissioner for Transportation. “While we focus on agro-cargo, we will also cater to passenger services. Ogun State is the gateway to Nigeria, and we believe this investment will bring long-term success.”

Despite the progress, there have been delays in the airport’s launch. Capt. Dapo Olumide, the airport’s consultant, explained that the delay was caused by the need to secure an operating permit rather than just an aerodrome certification.

He stressed the importance of the operating permit, stating, “What we are doing is working towards securing an operating permit, which is more stringent than aerodrome certification. It was important to ensure that we met the highest standards.”

Once fully operational, the airport will include an aerotropolis—a city designed around the airport—complete with hotels, cinemas, and other amenities. This will support the creation of new industries and employment opportunities in the region.

As the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport begins its charter flights, attention is now on securing the final approvals and starting scheduled flights in early 2025. The airport’s successful launch will bring increased connectivity to Ogun State, attract investment, and enhance the region’s role in Nigeria’s economic development.

In addition to its agricultural focus, the airport is poised to become a significant player in Nigeria’s aviation sector. With the infrastructure and regulatory approvals in place, the airport is on track to serve as a model for future airport developments across the country.

Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration views the Gateway Airport as a strategic investment for the state. The airport’s development is expected to provide an economic boost, not just through its agro-cargo activities but also by serving as a vital transportation link for both goods and passengers.

With the completion of key facilities and the commencement of charter flights, Ogun State is poised to enter a new era of growth, providing a gateway for economic opportunities and improved connectivity.

“We are confident that this project will yield positive results,” concluded Engr. Akinsanya. “The Gateway Airport is a symbol of progress for Ogun State and for Nigeria as a whole.”
