In a monumental step towards reshaping Nigeria’s role in the global digital economy, the Federal Government has launched a free Artificial Intelligence (AI) Academy.
The announcement, made by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, on Thursday, marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of digital advancement.
The AI Academy, which is being rolled out in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat and global tech giant Intel Corporation, aims to equip Nigerians with the skills necessary to thrive in the rapidly evolving world of AI.
The Minister’s remarks highlighted the urgency of embracing AI, stating that it is not merely a tool of the future, but one that can transform key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and security.
“The AI Academy is not just a training platform,” Minister Nnaji declared. “It is a transformative opportunity for Nigerians—students, youths, and civil servants—to acquire critical skills in AI that will prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow.”
Opening Doors to a Digital Future
The online programme, which is completely free, is set to run from now until January 30, 2025, with registration open to all Nigerians. Chief Nnaji encouraged citizens from all walks of life to seize the opportunity to be part of a movement that would position Nigeria at the forefront of the digital economy.
“AI is not just about learning new technologies; it is about rethinking how we approach the future. As AI reshapes industries and solves complex challenges, Nigeria must lead, not follow,” Nnaji added.
Participants in the AI Academy will gain access to self-paced courses covering AI fundamentals, ethics, tools, and real-world applications. This will be a crucial step in preparing individuals for the job market, as well as nurturing the next generation of innovators.
A Partnership for Progress
The partnership between the Federal Government, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and Intel Corporation reflects the power of global collaboration. Nnaji expressed his deep gratitude to these organisations for their commitment to bringing the AI Academy to life.
“This collaboration showcases the power of partnerships between governments, industries, and international organisations,” Nnaji said. “Together, we are laying the groundwork for a new era of innovation in Nigeria.”
Intel, a key partner, will also offer opportunities for participants to compete for ambassadorial roles and internships with the corporation, further strengthening the global reach of the programme.
AI’s Role in Nation-Building
The Minister spoke passionately about AI’s potential to drive positive change in Nigeria. According to him, the technology holds vast promise for solving the country’s most pressing challenges.
“AI is no longer a distant dream,” said Nnaji. “It is here, and it is ready to drive progress in critical sectors. From agriculture to healthcare, AI will provide innovative solutions to the unique challenges Nigeria faces.”
He stressed that the AI Academy would not only prepare individuals for employment but also create a pipeline of skilled leaders who could drive technological progress and economic growth.
Unlocking New Economic Frontiers
The AI Academy aligns with the Federal Government’s broader agenda to harness technology for economic development. As the global demand for tech-driven solutions grows, Nigeria’s investment in AI training could serve as a major catalyst for economic diversification.
“By equipping Nigerians with AI skills, we are creating a foundation for future innovation,” Nnaji explained. “We are preparing the next generation of problem-solvers who will reshape our nation’s technological and economic landscape.”
This initiative is expected to empower a wide range of Nigerians, from students to civil servants, to harness AI for their professional and personal growth.
A Vision for the Future
Minister Nnaji’s vision for Nigeria as a leader in the global digital economy is ambitious, yet grounded in the belief that with the right investments in education and technology, the country can compete on the world stage.
The launch of the AI Academy is seen as a crucial step in achieving this goal, providing citizens with the tools to participate in the rapidly growing digital landscape.
“This is just the beginning,” Nnaji concluded. “We are laying the foundation for a new Nigeria, one that is ready to lead in the digital age.”
