Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi offers to clear human rights lawyer’s bail bond amid legal battle
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has stepped forward to help pay the ₦30 million bail fee for human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi, who is involved in a defamation case against prominent lawyer Afe Babalola, was granted bail by the Ekiti Magistrate Court on Friday.
The court imposed strict bail conditions on Farotimi, which included a ₦30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must own a house), and the surrender of his passport. Additionally, Farotimi was ordered not to grant any media interviews.
Peter Obi’s aide, Tanko Yunusa, confirmed the Labour Party leader’s decision to meet Farotimi’s bail conditions. Yunusa posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, stating that Obi had decided to help Farotimi in light of the legal matter.
According to Yunusa, Obi’s decision was made after consulting with him as the leader of the Obidient Movement. Obi, who has long advocated for the rule of law and due process, expressed his desire for the legal situation to be resolved fairly and in the best interests of all parties involved.
“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of the rule of law, due process, and order, he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions,” Yunusa wrote.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, added that he was deeply concerned about the issue and hoped that it would be resolved in a manner that supported the integrity of the Nigerian legal system.
“He thanked our courts and all concerned on this matter. His concern is that the situation be resolved in the best interest of all concerned, as well as our legal system,” Yunusa continued in the statement.
The offer by Obi has drawn attention, not only because of the political implications but also due to the reputation of Farotimi as a prominent human rights lawyer and a former spokesperson for Obi’s presidential campaign in 2023.
