The Governor recently approved a ₦250,000 monthly stipend for each traditional ruler in Abia, a move that has been widely praised across the state.
This announcement was made by the Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Linus Nto Mba, in a heartfelt message to Governor Otti on Saturday.
The monthly stipend will begin in December 2024, a significant gesture that highlights the Governor’s commitment to improving the conditions of the traditional institutions.
“This is a remarkable step towards honouring our traditional rulers who play vital roles in fostering peace and unity within our communities,” Eze Mba said.
He spoke on behalf of the entire Council of Traditional Rulers, expressing deep gratitude to the Governor for his unwavering support and respect for the institution.
The ₦250,000 monthly stipend is in addition to the ₦150,000 Christmas package recently approved by Governor Otti for over 500 traditional rulers across the state.
The Christmas package is part of Otti’s effort to ensure that the monarchs are well taken care of during the festive season.
However, Eze Mba clarified that the ₦250,000 monthly stipend is separate from the Christmas package.
“The monthly stipend will begin in December 2024, and it is distinct from the Christmas package,” Eze Mba explained.
He also noted that the traditional rulers in Aba South will receive a different amount, which is yet to be disclosed.
In his message, Eze Mba further emphasised the cordial relationship between the traditional institution and Governor Otti, which has never been seen in previous administrations.
He pointed out that traditional rulers in Abia State have often been sidelined in the past, with little recognition or support from previous governors.
“This new development is a clear sign that the Governor values and respects the role of traditional rulers in the state,” Eze Mba said.
Under Otti’s leadership, the traditional rulers have felt more empowered and recognised, a move that is expected to strengthen the relationship between the people and their rulers.
The monthly stipend will ensure that the traditional rulers are able to better serve their communities and continue their work in maintaining law and order.
“We will continue to support Governor Otti in his efforts to rid our communities of criminal elements and ensure that peace and security prevail in Abia State,” Eze Mba pledged.
The traditional rulers have long been seen as important pillars of the community, with their influence extending to every corner of the state.
Their efforts in maintaining peace, solving local disputes, and providing leadership have made them a key part of the state’s governance structure.
Governor Otti’s decision to reward these rulers financially is a step towards recognising their invaluable contribution to the state’s growth and development.
Many have praised the move, with citizens expressing hope that this gesture will inspire more respect and collaboration between traditional institutions and the government.
In recent years, there has been growing recognition of the role that traditional rulers can play in solving local issues, especially those related to security.
Eze Mba noted that traditional rulers are crucial in the fight against crime, saying that they are often the first line of defence when criminal activities occur in their communities.
He also reiterated that the traditional rulers will continue to work closely with the government to ensure that criminals are brought to justice and that peace is maintained in every community.
“The Governor has our full support, and we will continue to work with him to ensure that the security of our people remains a top priority,” Eze Mba said.
Governor Otti’s administration has made significant strides in improving the security situation in Abia State, and this new initiative further demonstrates his commitment to strengthening governance at all levels.
In addition to the financial support for traditional rulers, the state government has also been working on various infrastructure projects, creating job opportunities, and improving education.
