In a shocking incident, a man in Ebonyi State has reportedly killed his wife over a disagreement about how to prepare a tuber of yam.

The tragedy took place in Nsokkara, Ezza South Local Government Area, where the man, identified as Joshua Nwafor, and his wife, Charity, lived.

Charity, originally from Awkuzu in Onicha Local Government Area, had been married to Joshua for 17 years. The couple had children together, and their neighbours described them as a typical family until this heartbreaking event unfolded.

The argument began when Joshua brought out a yam for the family’s meal. Charity reportedly insisted she preferred roasting the yam instead of cooking it, leading to a disagreement.

“The man brought out yam to be cooked for the entire family,” the eyewitness said. “The wife told him she was not going to eat the cooked yam, that she preferred roasted yam, and she went ahead to roast it. This angered the man.”

The situation escalated quickly.

“As a result, the man got angry, dragged her into the room, locked the door, and beat her mercilessly,” the eyewitness continued. “Sadly, she gave up the ghost during the assault.”

This violent act has left the Nsokkara community in shock. Many residents are struggling to comprehend how a disagreement over such a trivial matter could lead to such a fatal outcome.

A Marriage Shattered by Violence

Joshua and Charity’s 17-year marriage was marked by its longevity, but this incident highlights the hidden struggles many couples face behind closed doors.

An advocate against domestic violence, who asked to remain unnamed, weighed in on the matter.

“Life has no duplicate,” the advocate said. “No matter how long a marriage has lasted, if it becomes life-threatening, it is better to walk away. Staying in such situations can lead to tragedy, as we see here. People need to put their safety first, regardless of societal pressure.”

Police Assure Investigation

The Ebonyi State Police Command has been informed of the case and has pledged a thorough investigation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, spoke to reporters about the incident.

“This is a sad and tragic case,” DSP Ukandu said. “We are confirming the details and will ensure a thorough investigation. Whoever is found culpable will face the full weight of the law.”

The police’s response has reassured many in the community that justice will be served. However, this incident has also reignited conversations about the prevalence of domestic violence in Nigeria.

A National Problem

Domestic violence remains a pressing issue in Nigeria. According to data from the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), 30% of women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence from their partners at some point.

Despite legal frameworks like the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, which criminalises domestic violence, enforcement remains a challenge, especially in rural areas.

Human rights organisations have called for increased awareness and education to address the root causes of domestic violence.

“It’s not just about laws,” said a representative of the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA). “We need to change societal attitudes that normalise violence. Men and women must be educated on healthy conflict resolution and the importance of mutual respect in relationships.”
