In a major operation aimed at safeguarding public health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized a massive cache of unregistered food products worth over N3.8 billion in Lagos State. This significant haul comes as a result of a targeted raid conducted by the agency’s Investigation & Enforcement Directorate at a warehouse located in the bustling Apongbon Oke Arin Market.
Acting on a credible tip-off regarding the distribution of potentially harmful and unregulated food items, NAFDAC officials swiftly mobilized and executed a surprise raid on the warehouse. The operation yielded a staggering discovery: a vast stockpile of unregistered food products, including various processed foods, beverages, and other consumables, all valued at a staggering N3,818,802,720.
Following the seizure, the warehouse has been placed under immediate hold pending further investigation. The management of the facility has been summoned to answer questions regarding the origin and intended distribution of these unregistered products. NAFDAC has vowed to take appropriate sanctions against those found to be involved in this illegal activity.
This operation underscores NAFDAC’s unwavering commitment to protecting public health by ensuring that only safe and quality food products reach Nigerian consumers. The agency has consistently emphasized the importance of adhering to regulatory standards and has urged the public to be vigilant in identifying and reporting suspected cases of substandard or counterfeit food products.
As the festive season approaches, NAFDAC has reiterated its call to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to food products to the nearest NAFDAC office. This collaborative effort between the agency and the public is crucial in safeguarding the health and well-being of all Nigerians.
Background:
The seizure of unregistered food products poses a significant threat to public health. These products may contain harmful substances, such as expired ingredients, excessive preservatives, or even counterfeit substances. Consuming such products can lead to serious health consequences, including food poisoning, allergic reactions, and long-term health issues.
NAFDAC plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and quality of food products in Nigeria. The agency is responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, distribution, and sale of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, and other regulated products. Through its regulatory activities, NAFDAC aims to protect public health, promote rational drug use, and ensure the availability of safe and efficacious medicines.
