In a dramatic revelation, the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has issued Red Notices for 14 Nigerian nationals allegedly involved in crimes spanning continents. These suspects face charges ranging from human trafficking and drug smuggling to organised fraud and sexual exploitation.
The names, published on INTERPOL’s website, showcase a troubling spectrum of accusations linked to Nigerian citizens across different countries. Among the suspects is 47-year-old Felix Omoregie, wanted by Belgium for allegedly heading a criminal syndicate that exploits minors for prostitution.
Web of Exploitation
According to Belgian authorities, Omoregie is accused of coordinating human trafficking for sexual exploitation. “The charges involve sexual exploitation of minors over 16 years, organised crime, and leading a criminal organisation,” the Red Notice states.
Jessica Edosomwan, another suspect, is wanted by France for trafficking multiple victims. French authorities described her as part of an organised gang profiting from illegal activities.
Meanwhile, accusations against other suspects reveal a broader network of transnational crime. Argentina seeks Uche Egbue for alleged drug trafficking. Similarly, Jude Uzoma and Chinedu Ezeunara are wanted by Brazil and Uruguay, respectively, for their alleged involvement in narcotics smuggling.
Complex Web of Criminality
The charges against these individuals are not limited to human and drug trafficking. Some suspects are accused of organised fraud and violent crimes. Benedict Okoro faces allegations of operating within an organised criminal group in Nicaragua.
In Angola, three suspects—Benedict Okoro, Ikechukwu Obidiozor, and Alachi Stanley—are implicated in cases of kidnapping, robbery, and illegal possession of firearms. India also seeks two Nigerian nationals: Austine Costa and Okromi Festus. Costa is accused of criminal conspiracy and forgery, while Okromi faces charges of fraud and deceit.
Other nations, including Canada and China, have requested international cooperation through INTERPOL to apprehend Nigerian suspects for crimes like sexual assault, human trafficking, and drug smuggling.
INTERPOL Clarifies Role of Red Notices
INTERPOL clarified that a Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant but a request to locate and provisionally detain individuals pending further legal action. The global police body emphasized the need for public cooperation in tracking suspects.
“A Red Notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action. It is issued based on the legal framework of the requesting member country,” INTERPOL stated.
The organisation encouraged anyone with information to contact local police authorities.

Security experts have expressed concern about the increasing involvement of Nigerians in global criminal networks. Dr. Adebayo Onuoha, a renowned security analyst, linked the trend to systemic socio-economic challenges.
“This is a wake-up call for governments and institutions to address the root causes,” Onuoha stated. “Poverty, unemployment, and a lack of opportunities push individuals into crime. Strengthening international collaboration is crucial to dismantling these networks.”
The alarming development highlights the urgent need for Nigeria to bolster its internal security measures while cooperating with international law enforcement to restore its global reputation.
Rising Trend of Transnational Crime
Recent data suggests a rising trend of Nigerians being implicated in international criminal activities. Experts attribute this to factors such as weak border controls, inadequate law enforcement mechanisms, and poor economic conditions at home.
In 2023, a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) revealed that Nigerian criminal syndicates are active in over 30 countries. These groups are primarily involved in drug smuggling, human trafficking, and online fraud.
The situation also underscores a growing challenge for INTERPOL, which relies on member nations to enforce Red Notices. Some countries may hesitate to act due to bureaucratic hurdles, political considerations, or diplomatic sensitivities.
