NiMet Warns: Dust Haze to Envelop Nigeria for Three Days

    Share

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has sounded the alarm over an impending three-day dust haze expected to affect various parts of the country from Thursday to Saturday. The forecast, issued on Wednesday in Abuja, highlights potential disruptions to visibility, health concerns, and operational challenges for airlines.

According to NiMet, the northern region of the country will experience slight dust haze with generally good visibility throughout the forecast period. However, as one moves southwards, the conditions are expected to worsen, with moderate dust haze predicted in the southern states, reducing visibility to between 2 to 5 kilometers.

    Weather Overview

NiMet detailed the regional breakdown of the forecast. The northern states are expected to have relatively clear skies with a slight dust haze. Meanwhile, the North Central region will experience similar conditions but with pockets of moderate haze likely in some areas.

“The southern part of the country will face moderate dust haze, with visibility ranging from 2 kilometers to 5 kilometers throughout the period,” NiMet stated.

The coastal regions are projected to experience early morning fog or mist, which could transition into slight dust haze mixed with patches of clouds by the afternoon and evening.

    Public Health Advisory

NiMet has also issued health warnings, particularly for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. “Dust particles are in suspension; the public should take necessary precautions. People with asthmatic health conditions and other respiratory issues should be cautious of the present weather condition,” the agency advised.

Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities during peak dust periods, wear face masks for protection, and ensure proper ventilation indoors. Medical practitioners often emphasize the increased risk of respiratory infections during dust haze episodes, urging vulnerable groups to take preventive measures.

    Impact on Aviation

For airline operators, the dust haze poses a significant operational challenge. NiMet has advised operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to ensure the safety of their flights. Reduced visibility could lead to potential delays or cancellations.

Speaking on the issue, a NiMet official said, “We urge all airline operators to engage with us for updated flight documentation. This will enhance safety planning during the dusty weather conditions.”

Dust Haze Phenomenon: A Seasonal Reality

Dust haze is a common weather occurrence during the dry season in Nigeria, typically caused by the Harmattan winds blowing from the Sahara Desert. These winds carry fine dust particles across vast distances, blanketing regions with a hazy atmosphere.

Meteorologists explain that while the phenomenon is predictable, its intensity varies yearly based on environmental factors such as desert activity and atmospheric moisture levels.

During this period, it is not uncommon for the air quality to degrade significantly, with the particulate matter in the air increasing. This has direct implications for human health, especially for those with conditions like asthma, bronchitis, or other respiratory illnesses.

    Safety Precautions for Residents

NiMet emphasized the importance of staying updated with weather information to minimize risks. “Residents are advised to stay informed through weather updates from NiMet,” the agency stated.

Experts recommend several safety measures to cope with the dust haze, including:

    1. Using Face Masks: Particularly for individuals working outdoors, face masks can help filter out harmful particles.
    2. Maintaining Hydration: Staying hydrated aids the body in coping with dry weather conditions.
    3. Limiting Outdoor Exposure: Vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children, should avoid prolonged outdoor activities.
    4. Proper Home Ventilation: Using air purifiers or keeping windows closed can reduce indoor exposure to dust particles.
