Lagos residents had their Christmas celebrations disrupted when an armed robbery attempt in the Safejo area of Amukoko was foiled by the swift intervention of the Lagos State Police Command. The operation led to the arrest of three suspected robbers, with others still on the run.
The suspects, identified as Emmanuel Okoli (20), Ogunde Tejiri (20), and Emmanuel Orji (18), were caught in the act as they terrorized residents in the early hours of December 25. The gang reportedly wielded dangerous weapons to rob fun seekers and households in the area.
A Swift Police Response
Speaking on the incident, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, commended the proactive efforts of the Lagos State Police Command. “On Christmas Day, at about 1 a.m., police operatives attached to the Lagos Command received a distress call about hoodlums operating around the Safejo area of Amukoko. Their immediate deployment to the scene resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of weapons used during the robbery.”
The quick action was part of a broader strategy implemented by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. According to Adejobi, the directive mandated state commands to heighten security efforts during the festive season to curb rising criminal activities. “This period is crucial for Nigerians. We are committed to ensuring that citizens enjoy the holidays without fear of insecurity,” Adejobi stated.
Robbery Plans Gone Awry
Residents of the Safejo area described the attempted heist as a “night of terror.” A local shop owner, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared her harrowing experience. “I heard shouting and noises at around midnight. It was frightening. Then we saw police sirens, and everything changed. We thank God they came on time.”
Witnesses recounted that the gang had begun raiding houses and shops when the police intervened. Their timely response reportedly scattered the group, leading to the apprehension of three suspects while others managed to flee.
Community Relief and Continued Efforts
The arrests have brought temporary relief to the residents of Amukoko, a community that has experienced recurring crime during festive periods. However, concerns remain about the gang members who escaped. “We are worried that they might regroup and come back. The police need to find them before they do more harm,” another resident warned.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, assured the public of continued efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects. “Our men are combing the area and following leads to ensure that every member of this criminal gang is brought to justice,” Ishola said.
Broader Crackdown on Holiday Crimes
The foiled robbery in Lagos is just one of many police operations conducted across Nigeria during the festive season. ACP Adejobi highlighted the broader anti-crime measures implemented nationwide. “The Inspector-General’s directive has yielded significant results. From Lagos to other states, we have dismantled several criminal operations targeting fun seekers and innocent citizens during Christmas.”
The proactive measures, which included increased patrols and strategic deployments in crime-prone areas, were aimed at ensuring a secure environment for Nigerians during the holidays. “Our officers are working tirelessly, day and night, to protect lives and property. The success of these operations is proof of their dedication,” Adejobi added.
Ongoing Investigations
While the arrested suspects are now in custody, the investigation into their activities continues. Police have recovered weapons used in the attempted robbery, which include machetes and other dangerous items. These will serve as evidence in the prosecution of the suspects.
“The Lagos Police Command is committed to ensuring that every criminal element is dealt with according to the law. We urge citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities,” Adejobi concluded.
