In a dramatic turn of events, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has strongly denied allegations of threatening President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing his unwavering respect for the presidency while advocating for a fair and inclusive approach to Nigeria’s controversial Tax Reform Bill.

The controversy began on December 26, when Mohammed criticized the proposed Tax Reform Bill during a public address. He labeled the bill as detrimental to northern states and warned that pushing it through without amendments could lead to unrest. His remarks included a declaration that Bauchi State was ready to show its “true colour” if the reforms were enforced as is. The presidency swiftly responded, urging Mohammed to adopt a statesmanlike approach and retract what it termed as a veiled threat.

Governor Responds to Misrepresentation

On Tuesday, Mohammed’s Media Aide, Mukhtar Gidado, issued a five-page statement defending the governor’s stance. Gidado accused critics of twisting the governor’s remarks out of context.

“It is the height of mischief that Governor Bala Mohammed’s candid advice on the dangers of proceeding with bad decisions or policies that could worsen the plight of the masses has been taken out of context as a threat to the presidency,” Gidado stated.

He argued that the governor’s comments were intended as precautionary advice, rooted in concern for the economic struggles of ordinary Nigerians. According to Gidado, Mohammed sought to ensure the proposed tax reforms would be “equitable, inclusive, and sensitive to the unique socio-economic challenges” of the country.

A Call for Dialogue

Mohammed’s reservations, the statement noted, align with the sentiments of several governors, including some from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). These governors have voiced their opposition to the tax reforms, citing their potential to exacerbate economic hardships.

“It is dishonest to accuse Governor Bala Mohammed, as the Presidency has done in its face-saving response, of adopting an anti-dialogue or unstatesmanlike posture,” the statement continued. “That is not the antecedent of Bala Mohammed, who has consistently upheld principles that strengthen national cohesion, constitutionalism, and good governance.”

The governor’s camp also criticized the presidency for allegedly sidelining key stakeholders in the drafting of the tax reform. They argued that a transparent, consultative process involving the National Economic Council (NEC) and other bodies could have prevented the current impasse.

Political Undertones?

Observers have noted the political undercurrents in the dispute. Mohammed, a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was singled out for criticism, a move his team described as a veiled attempt at blackmail.

“Could it be because he is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)?” Gidado questioned.

The statement further accused the presidency of ignoring NEC recommendations to revise the bill, raising questions about the government’s commitment to dialogue.

A Governor’s Record of Patriotism

Supporters of Mohammed highlighted his track record of patriotism and collaboration with the federal government, even under the current administration. Despite criticisms from within his party, Mohammed has consistently advocated for policies that prioritize national unity and governance.

“It is on record that even in the life of this administration, some mischievous elements across party lines have accused the Bauchi State Governor of pandering to the interests of the Tinubu administration,” Gidado stated. “Conscious that such is the fate of patriots, he remains undeterred.”

Balancing Act Amid Rising Tensions

The tax reform debate has become a flashpoint in Nigeria’s political landscape, with leaders from various regions expressing divergent views. The bill, designed to broaden the country’s revenue base, has faced criticism for its perceived insensitivity to the economic realities of poorer states.

Mohammed’s vocal opposition underscores the growing tensions between federal and state governments over fiscal policies. His remarks also highlight the delicate balancing act required of Nigerian leaders as they navigate competing regional and national interests.

What Lies Ahead?

The Bauchi State government reiterated its willingness to work with the presidency to address the contentious aspects of the Tax Reform Bill. Mohammed’s team called for a return to dialogue and an inclusive approach that accommodates the concerns of all stakeholders.

“Governor Bala Mohammed remains committed to collaborating with the Federal Government to address all national challenges, including the Tax Reform Bill in its present unacceptable form, for the overall growth and development of our dear country,” Gidado concluded.
