In a powerful display of unity and statesmanship, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has moved to quash growing speculation of a rift between him and his predecessor, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson. The governor, in a visit to Dickson’s country home in Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area, sought to reinforce the message of togetherness, stressing that the politics of bitterness had no place in the future of the state.

Diri’s statement, delivered in the presence of his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, was aimed directly at putting to rest months of speculation fueled by political gossipers and critics who had peddled rumors of a falling-out between the two leaders. In a candid address, Diri was unequivocal in his stance on the relationship, calling Dickson his political mentor and emphasizing the crucial role the former governor played in his rise to power.

“Let me make it clear today—there is no rift between myself and my predecessor. Senator Henry Seriake Dickson is not only my boss, but God used him to ensure my emergence as governor of this state. To those spreading falsehoods, I say they are wasting their time,” Governor Diri declared.

The meeting, a well-timed yuletide visit, was seen as a strategic effort to quell the increasing rumours that had been circulating in political circles, particularly among those eager to see division within the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State. Diri also made it clear that the visit was a step towards strengthening the political fabric of the state, one that is deeply woven with the shared history and ambitions of both men.

In a statement issued by Diri’s spokesman, Daniel Alabrah, the governor expressed his discontent with the rampant rumour-mongering that had plagued the state’s political landscape. According to Alabrah, the governor viewed the visit as a timely and necessary action to put an end to any doubts surrounding the relationship between Diri and Dickson.

Governor Diri, a man who has faced his fair share of challenges in office, noted that his tenure was not without its struggles, including the difficult decisions that sometimes lead to unintended misunderstandings. He admitted that, as governor, his decisions were not always perfect, acknowledging that mistakes were part of leadership. However, he emphasized that there was always room for reconciliation and explanation when needed.

“I am not perfect, and I understand that sometimes my decisions may not sit well with everyone. But if anyone feels aggrieved, including you, Sir,” Diri said while speaking directly to Senator Dickson, “I am always open to dialogue. We can always discuss and come to an understanding. If necessary, we can reverse decisions if they are wrong.”

The warmth of the visit was palpable, with Diri’s words underscoring a commitment to transparency, cooperation, and mutual respect between the two leaders. This message was welcomed by many Bayelsans, who had been anxious about the political future of the state amidst the growing tensions within the PDP.

Senator Dickson, who currently represents Bayelsa West in the National Assembly, echoed the sentiments of his successor, expressing his unwavering support for Diri and reaffirming their shared vision for the development of Bayelsa. He condemned the efforts by “mischief-makers” who sought to sow discord between the two political heavyweights.

“For those who wish to see disunity, they have failed. My relationship with Governor Diri is rooted in mutual respect and understanding. We are both committed to the progress of this state, and we will continue to work together for its betterment,” Dickson stated with conviction.

The former governor’s words were a clear signal that, despite the occasional disagreements or policy differences that might arise, his commitment to working alongside Diri for the good of the state remained unwavering.

Both leaders also used the occasion to urge Bayelsans to reject the politics of division and instead focus on the greater good of the state. Diri, in particular, called for an end to the politics of bitterness that had often plagued the state’s political landscape.

“In Bayelsa, there is too much bitterness, and I believe it’s time we put that behind us. Those who are interested in public office should remember that power comes from God, and He uses people to make His will manifest. Let’s stop spreading hatred and divisiveness,” he said, his words directed not only at his political allies but also at his opponents.

The Bayelsa governor’s call for unity and peace resonated with many across the state, who have witnessed firsthand the toll that political rancour can take on both governance and the general public. The visit marked a rare moment of solidarity between the two leaders, offering a refreshing contrast to the often-toxic nature of Nigerian politics, where rifts and conflicts are commonplace.

As the state moves into a new year, many Bayelsans are hopeful that Diri and Dickson will continue to work together to tackle the challenges facing the state, from infrastructural development to addressing the concerns of the people.
