DSS Strikes Terrorism Hard: Major Offensive Clears ESN’s Southeast Strongholds

    Share

In a bold move aimed at eradicating the growing menace of terrorism across Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS) has launched a series of highly successful counterterrorism operations, striking major blows to terror groups and bringing relief to affected regions. The operations, which targeted bandit groups in Niger State and separatist militants in the Southeast, have been hailed as a significant step toward restoring security and peace to the nation.

On Monday, DSS operatives launched a comprehensive offensive in Niger State, targeting notorious AK-47 wielding bandits who had been wreaking havoc on the local population. These bandits, known for terrorizing communities on motorcycles, had looted businesses and disrupted life in the Rafi Local Government Area (LGA). In a swift and strategic move, DSS operatives launched a decisive attack, neutralizing several bandits in the process. Weapons, motorcycles, and other terror supplies were seized during the operation, further weakening the criminal network.

This offensive in Niger State marks the second successful operation by the DSS in less than a week. Last Friday, the agency neutralized three bandits in Mairiga LGA of the state, sending a powerful message to those engaging in violent acts.

Clearing the Southeast: The DSS’ Tactical Approach Against IPOB and ESN

While the operation in Niger State was crucial, another equally important initiative unfolded in the Southeast. For years, the region had been plagued by the violent activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). These groups, bent on destabilizing the Southeast, had carried out a series of attacks, including killings, kidnappings, and bombings, particularly around the festive season.

But this holiday season marked a sharp contrast. For the first time in years, residents in the Southeast could celebrate Christmas and New Year’s without the looming fear of terrorist violence. The DSS, working in close collaboration with the military and other security agencies, launched a series of precision operations that dismantled several ESN and IPOB camps across the region.

One of the most notable operations took place in the forests of Imilike Agu, located in Udenu LGA, Enugu State. The DSS led a coordinated effort that resulted in the destruction of several weapons caches and the neutralization of high-ranking IPOB and ESN commanders. The operation also led to the seizure of numerous improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and AK-47 rifles, significantly crippling the group’s ability to carry out further attacks.

    Restoring Peace Amidst Terror

The success of the DSS operations in both Niger and the Southeast has had far-reaching implications. It has restored a sense of security in areas previously beleaguered by terror, giving citizens a much-needed respite from the violence that has plagued their communities.

The scale of DSS operations was not limited to the Southeast. In the last three weeks alone, the agency had also carried out successful raids in the Northwest and Northeast, with notable successes in Zamfara and Borno states. According to the source, operations in Gusau, Zamfara, and Maiduguri, Borno, saw the capture of several notorious bandits and militants.
