No Mercy for Killers of Police Officers – IGP Egbetokun Warns

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has made it clear that no assault, let alone the killing of any police officer, will be tolerated by the Nigeria Police Force in 2025. The IGP delivered a stern message during his official visit to Enugu State, underscoring that any violence against police personnel would be met with an “appropriate response” by the Force.

“We will not tolerate any assault on our police officers, let alone the killing of any policeman,” Egbetokun declared emphatically during a meeting with officers of the Enugu State Command. “An assault on a policeman is a direct attack on the IGP, and we will not let that go unchallenged. This year, we will say no to assaults and, most importantly, no to the killing of any of our officers.”

The IGP’s comments come in the wake of growing concerns over rising attacks on police officers in various regions of the country. These violent acts, often targeted at law enforcement personnel in the course of their duties, have sparked public outcry and raised questions about the safety and welfare of police officers.

While addressing the Enugu officers, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the need for unity in responding to such threats. “Where a policeman is assaulted or killed, there must be a collective and appropriate response,” he urged, reiterating his commitment to ensuring that officers have the support they need in these trying times.

Egbetokun also used his visit as an opportunity to commend the officers in Enugu State for their professionalism and dedication. “I want to assure you officers of the Enugu State Command that we recognize the good work you are doing,” he said. “You are hardworking, committed, and diligent in your duties. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed.”

The IGP’s visit to Enugu was marked by a meeting with state governor, Peter Mbah, who praised the efforts of the police in the state. “Governor Mbah expressed his admiration for the officers, and I, too, am incredibly proud of the achievements and conduct of the Enugu police force,” Egbetokun said.

However, despite the praise, the IGP acknowledged that there were still some bad elements within the Force that needed to be addressed. “As good as you have been, there are still a few bad eggs among you,” he said. “We will address this during our internal meetings, but we will not allow a small group of bad officers to tarnish the image of the entire Force.”

The IGP outlined a comprehensive strategy for 2025, emphasizing the need for continuous training, ethical conduct, and the introduction of modern policing tools to enhance the capacity of officers. “In this year, we are going to vigorously pursue our policing version for Nigeria,” he promised. “We will focus on professionalism, ethical conduct, and the continuous development of our officers. We will equip you with modern tools to carry out your duties effectively.”

Beyond professional development, Egbetokun also assured the officers that their welfare would be a priority. “The Federal Government of Nigeria is passionate about the welfare of police officers,” he emphasized. “The President recognizes the sacrifices that you make, and he is deeply concerned about your well-being.”

In response to rumors circulating on social media about police welfare, the IGP was quick to dispel any doubts. “I’ve seen all sorts of mischievous posts, including one that claims I instructed officers to beat up anyone who asks them for their phone. These are the handiwork of enemies of the police,” he stated. “No IGP would ever neglect the welfare of his officers. Rest assured, we are working on several welfare programs, which we will unveil in due time. Please do not be misled by false information.”

The issue of police welfare has been a long-standing concern, with many officers raising alarms about the lack of adequate equipment, poor living conditions, and insufficient support for their families. The recent spate of violent attacks on police officers has only intensified these worries, with many calling for urgent reforms to improve both the safety and well-being of law enforcement personnel.

Despite these challenges, IGP Egbetokun’s visit to Enugu was framed as a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to providing the necessary resources and support for the Nigeria Police Force. “We are not just concerned with equipping you with tools, but we will also ensure that your welfare is prioritized,” he said. “The Nigerian government stands with you, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that you have what you need to do your job effectively.”

In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed an alarming rise in attacks on police officers, particularly in volatile regions where criminal elements and insurgent groups are active. These incidents have led to heightened security concerns, as well as calls for stronger measures to protect law enforcement personnel.

The IGP’s message signals a shift in the Force’s approach to addressing such threats. By pledging a “zero-tolerance” policy for attacks on police officers, Egbetokun aims to send a clear message to those who would seek to harm law enforcement personnel.

The Nigeria Police Force has long struggled with public perception and internal corruption, but under Egbetokun’s leadership, there is a clear emphasis on professionalization, accountability, and the welfare of officers. As the Force embarks on its mission for 2025, one thing is certain: the IGP’s commitment to protecting the safety of police officers is unwavering.
