The Nigeria Police Force has made a significant breakthrough in its fight against crime, apprehending a suspect in the murder of CSP Hassan Jega, the late Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Agbarho Division, Delta State. The suspect, identified as Ogaga Dickson, was part of a notorious armed robbery syndicate that has terrorised the region.
Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest during a briefing in Abuja, detailing the events leading to this critical development.
“This arrest marks a significant victory in our commitment to combat organized crime,” Adejobi declared.
The Tragic Loss of CSP Jega
On October 14, 2024, CSP Hassan Jega led his team to intercept an armed robbery operation in Delta State. The mission turned deadly when the robbers engaged the police in a fierce gun battle. Tragically, the brave officer lost his life in the line of duty.
The incident sent shockwaves through the police force and the Agbarho community, sparking an intensified manhunt for the perpetrators. “CSP Jega’s sacrifice will not be forgotten. This arrest is a step toward justice for his family and the community,” Adejobi said.
Decisive Police Action
In a bold operation, the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) raided the gang’s hideout. A gunfight ensued, resulting in the deaths of four gang members. Ogaga Dickson, however, was apprehended alive.
The police also seized a cache of weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, an English pistol, a locally made firearm, and assorted ammunition. The operation further led to the recovery of six luxury vehicles suspected to be proceeds of crime.
“These efforts reflect our determination to ensure criminals are brought to book,” Adejobi noted.
Child Trafficking Syndicate Exposed
In a separate operation, the police uncovered a child-trafficking network led by Pastor Dayo Bernard of the End Time Army Ministry in Plateau State. The operation, conducted on December 2, 2024, resulted in the rescue of five children aged between 2 and 4.
“The rescued children were abducted from various homes in Jos and have been reunited with their families,” Adejobi revealed.
The syndicate, which included accomplices identified as Rita Agboeze, Victoria Ugwu, Nanman Puntel, and Peter Ukwuani, confessed to selling 13 children at different prices. “The swift action by our operatives ensured that all 13 children were recovered safely,” the FPRO added.
The Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development played a crucial role in reuniting the victims with their families.
Crackdown on Illegal Arms
Further demonstrating its resolve, the police announced the recovery of 14 AK-47 rifles as part of a nationwide mop-up of illicit firearms. The operation aligns with the directive of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to curtail the circulation of illegal arms, a major driver of violent crime in the country.
“These measures are designed to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety,” Adejobi emphasized.
Strategic Approach to Security
The Nigeria Police Force has adopted proactive, intelligence-driven strategies to combat crime, resulting in a significant reduction in organized and violent crimes across the country.
Adejobi highlighted the importance of collaboration with local communities, stating, “We urge Nigerians to continue providing actionable intelligence to support our efforts. Together, we can create a safer environment for everyone.”
Public Reactions
The arrests and successful operations have drawn widespread praise from the public. Many citizens see these efforts as a renewed commitment by the police to restore law and order..
Similarly, parents in Jos have commended the rescue of trafficked children. “Words cannot express our gratitude for the safe return of our children,” said Mr. Peter Ugwu, a father of one of the rescued kids.
For now, the arrest of Ogaga Dickson and the dismantling of the child-trafficking syndicate stand as powerful testaments to what coordinated police action can achieve.
“This is just the beginning. We will continue to pursue justice for victims and ensure Nigeria is safe for all,” Adejobi concluded.
