APC Must Apologize to Peter Obi Over Inflammatory Language, Dangerous Threats – Atiku

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called for an apology from the All Progressives Congress (APC) over what he describes as inflammatory and dangerous threats made against Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in the last general elections.

Atiku’s statement, made on Tuesday, underscores the severity of the situation, particularly concerning the recent remarks by APC spokesperson Felix Morka. Atiku condemned the language used against Obi, which he believes reflects a broader worrying trend under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, where opposition figures are increasingly targeted.

“The inflammatory remarks by Felix Morka, directed at Peter Obi, are deeply concerning and signal a disturbing shift in the governance model of the current administration,” Atiku said. He expressed alarm over the language, which he believes threatens the very fabric of Nigeria’s democracy.

Atiku pointed out that Morka’s comment, suggesting Obi has “crossed the line,” represents an alarming disdain for democratic values and could lead to further political repression. He called on the APC to clarify what was meant by such ominous language, warning that such rhetoric has no place in a democratic society.

The PDP leader also expressed concern over the ongoing detention of Mahdi Shehu, a prominent voice of dissent. He criticized the prolonged imprisonment of Shehu, pointing out that it further undermines the space for opposition views and stifles democratic discourse.

“Atiku further emphasized the role of opposition leaders in strengthening democracy. He said, “In a true democracy, the contributions of opposition figures are essential for fostering good governance and public accountability.”

Atiku also condemned the APC’s attempt to undermine Obi’s call for constructive engagement, likening it to a “lawless Wild West,” and described this as reckless and uncalled for. He demanded that the APC issue a formal apology to both Obi and Nigerians for the disgraceful language used by its spokesperson.

“The ongoing vilification of opposition figures by the Tinubu administration sets a dangerous precedent,” Atiku warned. “It is now time for Nigerians to rise and urge the government to abandon its stifling approach to dissent and opposition.”

Atiku concluded his statement by urging all Nigerians to intervene and push for a reassessment of the government’s approach to managing political opposition, to ensure the survival of democracy in the country.
