Security operatives have thwarted a daring attempt by members of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) to establish a base in Oyo State. This camp was to serve as a strategic hub for coordinating terrorist activities in Oyo, Osun, and Kwara States.
Reports indicate that ISWAP members, fleeing intensified military operations in Maiduguri, Borno State, attempted to relocate their activities to the South-West. They allegedly partnered with a known collaborator operating in the Oke-Ogun region of Oyo State to identify a suitable location for their base.
The Nigerian Tribune revealed that the ISWAP loyalist had been involved in criminal activities, including kidnapping, in the Oke-Ogun area. He was reportedly making arrangements to establish the camp in the Afijio Local Government Area before security operatives intercepted the plot.
A Coordinated Security Effort
The operation to foil the terrorists’ plan involved extensive collaboration between security agencies across Oyo, Osun, Kwara, and other affected states. A breakthrough came after the ISWAP member held a secret meeting with collaborators in Osun State.
“Security agents got wind of the plan after monitoring the meeting,” a security source disclosed. “Following a swift operation, several gang members were arrested, leading to the recovery of multiple AK-47 rifles.”
The group’s suspected leader, however, managed to escape the initial crackdown. He reportedly fled to the Old Oyo National Park, a vast forest reserve that connects Kaduna, Niger, and Kwara States. This forest also serves as a potential corridor for criminal activities across the region.
Makinde Confirms Attempted Infiltration
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State acknowledged the development during a security briefing on Monday. He stated that insurgents fleeing from the North had attempted to set up camps near the Fashola Farms area in Oyo State.
“We will not allow any threats to our people’s safety,” Makinde assured. “Security operatives are working tirelessly to ensure that these elements are neutralized and that Oyo State remains safe.”
An independent source corroborated the governor’s statement, revealing that the terrorists initially targeted a site approximately five kilometers from Fashola Farms. The plot was disrupted after security forces intensified patrols and surveillance in the area.
The Role of the Kamoko Forest
The Kamoko Forest has emerged as a key route for criminal elements seeking to infiltrate the South-West. This expansive forest stretches from Kaduna through Niger and Kwara States, ultimately linking to the Old Oyo National Park.
A source familiar with the investigation explained, “The Kamoko Forest provides a cover for insurgents, enabling them to move undetected. This forest is a strategic concern for security agencies as it offers direct access to the South-West.”
Security agents have since heightened their presence in and around the forest, launching targeted operations to apprehend fleeing terrorists.
Heightened Alerts Across Regions
In response to the foiled plot, security agencies in the North-West, North-Central, and South-West regions have been placed on high alert. States such as Kaduna, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Osun, and Ogun are actively monitoring suspected movements of insurgent groups.
“The cooperation between these states’ security forces has been critical,” a source stated. “We cannot afford to let our guard down as these groups are constantly looking for vulnerabilities to exploit.”
Religious Tensions Spark Arrest in Oyo
In a related development, security agencies in Oyo State arrested a traditional worshiper accused of attempting to incite religious discord. The suspect reportedly made provocative statements disputing teachings in the Holy Quran and planned similar actions against the Holy Bible.
“This individual was deliberately stirring religious tensions,” a source said. “His actions could have sparked a major conflict between religious groups in the area.”
The man initially fled to Lekki, Lagos State, after his inflammatory activities were exposed. However, a joint operation by security operatives in Oyo and Ogun States led to his eventual capture.
Background on ISWAP’s Strategy
ISWAP, a splinter faction of Boko Haram, has long sought to expand its influence beyond the North-East. The group has been responsible for numerous attacks, including bombings, kidnappings, and assaults on military bases.
Analysts believe the recent crackdown in the North-East has forced the group to explore new territories. The South-West, with its economic significance and relative calm, presents an attractive target for insurgent groups looking to establish footholds.
However, security forces have consistently worked to disrupt these plans. The interception of this latest plot underscores the vigilance of Nigerian operatives and their commitment to national security.
Community Vigilance Needed
Security experts have called for increased community involvement in identifying and reporting suspicious activities. “Local residents are often the first to notice unusual movements,” said a security analyst. “Their cooperation with security agencies is vital in preventing these threats.”
The recent events also highlight the need for continued investment in intelligence gathering, surveillance, and regional collaboration to counter the evolving tactics of insurgent groups like ISWAP.
Reassurance from Authorities
Authorities have assured residents of Oyo State and surrounding regions that every effort is being made to maintain peace and security.
“We remain committed to protecting lives and property,” Governor Makinde emphasized. “Together, we will ensure that Oyo State remains a beacon of safety and development.”
