It Is Not About Me: Obi Explains Decision To Spend Over N1.5 Billion On Philanthropy

Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has revealed the motivation behind his staggering N1.5 billion commitment to humanitarian causes in 2024. The funds were directed toward education, healthcare, and empowerment, with Obi highlighting that his philanthropic acts stem from a deep-rooted desire to foster societal growth rather than self-aggrandizement.

During a recent visit to the Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Ndubisi Obi, the former presidential hopeful addressed questions about his charitable contributions. Obi’s answers have provided a profound insight into his enduring passion for uplifting the less fortunate, an ethos he has adhered to long before his political career.

“I have always been passionate about contributing to causes that improve people’s lives, even before I became Governor,” Obi explained, speaking candidly about his longstanding commitment to humanitarian efforts. “Whether it was in Haiti after the earthquake or locally here in Nigeria, my goal has always been the same: to make a difference.”

Throughout 2024, Obi’s philanthropic efforts have reached an all-time high, with large sums donated to various initiatives that span different sectors. Notably, during the visit, Obi made notable contributions of N10 million each to Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor’s College of Nursing Sciences in Amichi and to Bishop Ndubisi Obi’s ADON College of Health Technology in Nnewi. These donations are just the tip of the iceberg in Obi’s multifaceted approach to helping communities across the nation.

“These donations are nothing compared to the lasting change we can create through sustainable education and healthcare,” Obi remarked, underscoring his belief in the long-term impact of these efforts. The contributions, he noted, are a testament to his unwavering commitment to uplifting humanity. “I don’t give for fame, but because I believe in the power of education and healthcare to transform lives,” he stated emphatically.

Obi’s altruism is not limited to monetary donations alone. His involvement extends to hands-on initiatives, including a visit to the Diocesan Rehabilitation Centre, where he witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by victims of drug abuse. He also toured a school for children with special needs, which further solidified his resolve to support those who are often overlooked by mainstream society.

“What Bishop Ndubisi is doing here in Nnewi for the less privileged is inspiring,” Obi said, visibly moved by the impact of the Bishop’s work. “Seeing the dedication and commitment of people like him to improving the lives of vulnerable individuals, I felt compelled to contribute.”

Though some critics have speculated that Obi’s visible generosity is part of a larger strategy to bolster his public image following his loss in the 2023 elections, the former governor vehemently rejected these claims. He was quick to distance himself from any notion of self-interest, stating, “It is not about me. It’s about fulfilling a responsibility to society. Giving is not a political tool for me; it’s a duty that I feel obligated to carry out as long as I have the means to do so.”

According to Obi, his drive for philanthropy stems from both moral and spiritual values. He believes that every individual has a role to play in bettering the world, and for him, that role is firmly rooted in aiding the vulnerable. “I have always felt that it is our collective responsibility to improve the lives of those around us. The more you give, the more you realize that the joy and peace you gain from helping others far outweigh any form of recognition,” Obi reflected.

Obi’s dedication to humanitarian causes is not a new chapter in his life. Long before his political career took off, he was already engaging in charity work, focusing on issues like education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. His time in office as Governor of Anambra State is remembered for his progressive policies, especially in the education and healthcare sectors, which helped provide better opportunities for the state’s residents.

“I was in Haiti after the devastating earthquake, contributing to the rebuilding efforts there. It was a heart-wrenching experience, but it was also a reminder that no matter where we are, we must look out for each other,” Obi shared, recounting one of his earliest and most defining philanthropic moments.

This extensive track record of giving, coupled with his strategic contributions to various causes, paints a picture of a man who is deeply committed to societal betterment. The N1.5 billion that Obi allocated for humanitarian causes in 2024 is not a one-time event but part of an ongoing legacy of giving.

Obi’s philanthropy, however, goes beyond his personal experiences and past charitable actions. In an increasingly turbulent political environment, his charitable contributions also signal a broader message: that leadership should focus on tangible, lasting impact rather than short-term political gains. For Obi, the act of giving is both a personal and a political statement — one that prioritizes human dignity and collective growth over individual fame.

“These initiatives are proof of the kind of society we can build when we come together and dedicate ourselves to the common good,” Obi said, looking ahead to future endeavors. “I hope that others can be inspired by these efforts and that together, we can create a more compassionate society where everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive.”

As the year unfolds, Obi’s charitable contributions are expected to continue, with plans for further donations and support to institutions that champion the cause of education and healthcare. These ongoing commitments reinforce the idea that Obi’s humanitarianism is not a publicity stunt but a lifelong commitment to social transformation.
