The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has delivered a sharp rebuke to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, accusing him of actively undermining the peace efforts brokered by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State. The sharp criticism came after Wike accused the current Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of betraying the presidential peace accord in a series of public statements. However, HURIWA contends that it was Wike himself who sabotaged the agreement and disrupted the fragile peace in the state.
In a scathing statement released on Monday, HURIWA accused Wike of hypocrisy, alleging that while Governor Fubara had made significant sacrifices for the sake of peace, including withdrawing a high-profile court case he was positioned to win, Wike continued to stoke division with ongoing legal battles aimed at destabilizing the administration of his successor.
“The claim that Governor Fubara betrayed the peace accord is unfounded and misleading,” said the group. “Governor Fubara did what was expected of a loyal public servant when he withdrew a critical legal matter, signaling his commitment to peace. On the other hand, Wike’s relentless pursuit of divisive court cases is a direct betrayal of the accord and the trust placed in him by the president.”
Allegations Against Wike’s Motives
HURIWA’s condemnation of Wike’s actions is rooted in a series of contentious legal moves that, according to the group, have actively undermined Governor Fubara’s administration. One of the most contentious actions was Wike’s pursuit of a case in which he sought to validate a factional Speaker in the Rivers State House of Assembly, a move that was widely seen as an attempt to create a parallel power structure in the state.
“This is not just about personal ambition,” HURIWA stated. “Wike’s actions are part of a broader scheme to ensure he maintains influence over the political landscape in Rivers State, even after his time as governor.”
Wike’s legal battles are seen as an effort to divide the Rivers State House of Assembly and hinder Fubara’s ability to govern. The defection of 27 members of the Assembly to the All Progressives Congress (APC), followed by the controversial establishment of a factional Assembly, has only fueled these allegations.
“The crisis in the Rivers Assembly is a direct consequence of Wike’s obsession with control,” HURIWA continued. “His post-tenure political manoeuvrings have weakened the fabric of the state’s governance and created chaos where stability is needed most.”
A Closer Look at the Peace Accord
The peace accord brokered by President Tinubu was meant to resolve political divisions in Rivers State and ensure that the state government could focus on development rather than internal conflict. Fubara’s decision to withdraw the court case, which would have likely resulted in a win for his camp, was seen as a step toward reconciliation and a commitment to stability.
Wike, however, has continued to pursue several lawsuits against Fubara’s administration. According to HURIWA, this act not only jeopardizes the peace accord but also reflects Wike’s personal interest in retaining control over the state’s political and economic resources. Wike has dismissed accusations of sabotage, arguing that he is only seeking to uphold what he believes is his right to influence the political direction of Rivers State.
However, HURIWA rejects this rationale, claiming that Wike’s loyalty to President Tinubu is nothing more than an act of convenience, driven by personal and political ambitions rather than a genuine commitment to the national good.
“Wike’s loyalty is nothing more than a façade,” HURIWA argued. “He is not acting in the best interests of Rivers State or the nation. His actions are calculated to undermine the peaceful governance that the people of Rivers deserve.”
Public Disagreement Over Reconciliation
Wike has also called for reconciliation between himself and Governor Fubara. However, HURIWA dismissed these overtures, asserting that reconciliation with Wike would come at a high cost to the people of Rivers State.
“Governor Fubara does not need reconciliation with someone who is clearly working against his administration,” HURIWA noted. “The people of Rivers deserve a government focused on delivering development, not one entangled in political squabbles orchestrated by individuals whose interests lie elsewhere.”
Fubara, for his part, has largely remained focused on governing the state, despite the political drama unfolding around him. HURIWA has expressed confidence in his leadership and urged him to remain focused on delivering the promises made to the people of Rivers State, without being distracted by Wike’s divisive politics.
“The people of Rivers State chose Governor Fubara to lead them, not to be embroiled in endless political battles with his predecessor,” the group concluded. “We urge him to stay the course and continue working toward the progress of the state, despite the challenges posed by Wike’s efforts to destabilize his administration.”
Wike’s Lasting Impact on Rivers State
The crisis in Rivers State has exposed the deep political divisions left in the wake of Wike’s tenure as governor. The tensions between him and Governor Fubara, coupled with the factionalism in the state assembly, suggest that the political landscape may remain fractured for the foreseeable future.
HURIWA’s call for President Tinubu to take decisive action is a recognition that the political chaos in Rivers could have far-reaching consequences for governance in the state. With national unity and development at stake, HURIWA has urged the president to hold all political actors accountable for actions that undermine the rule of law.
“It is crucial that President Tinubu’s peace efforts are upheld and that those who undermine the peace process are held accountable,” HURIWA stressed. “The people of Rivers deserve a stable, accountable government that prioritizes their well-being over personal political agendas.”
As Rivers State grapples with political instability, the question remains whether the peace accord brokered by President Tinubu can survive in the face of continued efforts to destabilize the state by key political figures. Only time will tell if Governor Fubara can overcome these challenges and provide the leadership needed to restore stability to Rivers State.
