In yet another disturbing incident of abduction, a family in the Kubwa area of Abuja was targeted in a midnight raid by bandits, who forcibly took the father, mother, and their son, along with two others, from their home on Monday night.

The attack, which took place in the Chikakore neighborhood of Bwari Area Council, has left the community in shock, with residents fearful of the rising wave of insecurity in the nation’s capital. The gunmen, believed to be part of a well-organized kidnapping syndicate, stormed the home of Mr. Adefija Micheal Akinropo, his wife, and their young son, dragging them from their bedrooms in the dead of night.

A close family friend, who spoke under anonymity for safety reasons, described the terrifying scene. “The attackers came around midnight,” the source said. “They were about thirty in number, heavily armed with AK-47 rifles. They stormed into the house, waking everyone in the dead of night. The kidnappers didn’t give any time for resistance; they just barged in and took them away.”

The group of armed men, reportedly clad in military-style uniforms, reportedly first targeted the Akinropo family’s residence, abducting the husband, wife, and their son. According to the source, the kidnappers were not done after that. They then moved to a nearby poultry farm and abducted another man while also injuring his wife.

“These bandits are ruthless. They take anyone they can get their hands on, without mercy,” the resident continued. “It’s becoming a nightmare for us in this area. We don’t know where to turn for help anymore.”

The police were quickly notified, and officers from Byazin Police Station reportedly arrived at the scene shortly after the attack. However, by the time of filing this report, the kidnappers had not yet contacted the families for ransom demands, and the authorities had made no major breakthrough in the case.

Efforts to reach the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Josephine Adeh, proved futile. While she promised to respond to our inquiries, no updates were received at the time of going to press.

This latest kidnapping has added to the growing list of violent incidents in Abuja, with residents and security experts alike expressing concern over the escalating level of criminal activity. The Federal Capital Territory, which has traditionally been seen as a relatively secure area compared to other regions of the country, is now facing a disturbing surge in crimes such as kidnapping and armed robbery.

“The frequency of such attacks in Abuja is alarming,” said a security analyst, Dr. Chuka Okoye. “There’s been a sharp rise in organized crime groups targeting middle-class and high-profile individuals. The fact that they are now even abducting families from their homes in the dead of night shows just how bold these criminals have become.”

Residents of the Chikakore area are living in fear, with many now questioning the ability of security agencies to protect them. “We are scared for our lives now,” another resident shared. “It’s not safe to sleep at night anymore. We’ve called for more police patrols, but nothing is changing.”

In the wake of this troubling incident, calls for enhanced security measures in the FCT have grown louder. Experts have suggested a combination of increased police presence, community policing, and better intelligence gathering as potential solutions to curb the rising wave of kidnappings in the region.

The kidnappings have also prompted renewed concerns about the effectiveness of the government’s efforts to tackle the insecurity that continues to plague various parts of the country. Critics argue that despite the significant resources allocated to security agencies, kidnappers and other criminal elements have managed to evade capture, leaving citizens vulnerable.

Meanwhile, family members of the kidnapped Akinropo family are desperately waiting for any form of communication from the abductors. With no ransom demands made so far, the uncertainty surrounding their fate is taking an emotional toll on relatives and friends.

“We are heartbroken,” said a family member, speaking on condition of anonymity. “We have no idea where they are, or if they are even alive. All we want is for them to come back home safe.”

This kidnapping is just the latest in a string of similar incidents in the Federal Capital Territory. While some have been resolved through the payment of hefty ransoms, many families are left with no choice but to wait in agony as they hope for the safe return of their loved ones.

As Abuja grapples with the increasing menace of kidnapping, questions remain about the role of law enforcement and the government in tackling the criminal underworld that is making the city unsafe. The Akinropo family’s plight is a stark reminder that no one, regardless of their status or location, is immune from the terror of armed bandits who seem to have little fear of law enforcement.

With no immediate resolution in sight and residents growing more anxious by the day, the need for a comprehensive approach to combating insecurity in the capital is more pressing than ever. The family’s abduction underscores the growing concerns about the state of security in Nigeria’s capital and the broader challenges that remain in the fight against crime.
