Osun Governor Orders Movement Ban Ahead of Controversial LG Polls

    Share

Osogbo, Osun – In a bid to ensure the safety and security of voters, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has announced a statewide restriction on vehicular movement for Saturday, February 22, 2025, during the local government elections. The restriction will be enforced from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm across all 30 local government areas of the state.

The governor’s decision aims to curb potential security threats, including the possible influx of hoodlums and election-related violence. As the polls approach, there have been rising concerns over the integrity of the elections, with political observers speculating that the restricted movement will prevent disruptions caused by external forces.

“The safety of our citizens is paramount, and we will not allow any individual or group to jeopardize the peaceful conduct of the elections,” Governor Adeleke said in a statement issued by his office. “This measure is necessary to secure the electoral process, ensure smooth voting, and safeguard public order. Only accredited voters, media personnel, and civil society organizations will be allowed to move freely during this period.”

Tensions Rise Ahead of the Polls

The decision to enforce a vehicular restriction comes amid growing tensions between political parties and allegations of pre-election violence. In the lead-up to the February 22 elections, there have been reports of violent clashes between supporters of rival parties in some areas of the state. The local elections, which will decide leadership in Osun’s 30 local councils, are considered a significant test for Governor Adeleke’s administration, which has only been in power for a few months since his inauguration in November 2022.

While Governor Adeleke’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is the ruling party in the state, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has also shown a strong presence in Osun’s local politics. These elections will be a crucial marker of the state’s political future, as local governments often play a vital role in shaping the political landscape of any state.

    Security Measures and Law Enforcement

Security forces in Osun have been put on high alert ahead of the election day. Governor Adeleke’s office confirmed that the police, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other law enforcement agencies will work in concert to enforce the movement restriction. Violators of the restriction could face serious penalties, with the governor’s office warning that strict compliance will be expected.

“We are committed to making sure this election goes smoothly. We have mobilized all available resources to maintain peace and order throughout the day,” said Osun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, in a statement. “Only those with legitimate business—voters, accredited media teams, and observers—will be permitted to move around. We urge everyone to respect the rule of law and cooperate fully with security personnel.”

In addition to restricting vehicular movement, the state government has also heightened intelligence operations to identify and prevent any form of electoral malpractice, including vote buying and ballot box snatching. The police have been instructed to monitor known hotspots where election-related violence is likely to occur.

    Public Reaction and Concerns

While some residents of Osun have expressed support for the governor’s action, others have voiced concerns over the inconvenience it might cause. Many commuters, particularly those who rely on inter-city transport for daily activities, have criticized the measure, arguing that it could lead to unnecessary delays and financial losses.

“I understand the need for security, but how will I get to work on Saturday? This is an important day for many of us,” said Funke Adeola, a resident of Osogbo, the state capital. “It’s a good thing that the government is thinking about safety, but there must be a better way to handle this. I’m worried about missing my work hours.”

However, Governor Adeleke’s administration has reassured citizens that public transportation will be monitored and adjusted accordingly to allow only essential travel for those with election-related business.

“We know this will cause some inconvenience, but this is a sacrifice we must make for the peace and security of the state,” said the governor in his statement. “I call on all residents to remain calm, patient, and law-abiding. We must all work together to ensure a peaceful, free, and fair election.”

The Role of Security Agencies and Observers

In addition to the movement restrictions, Governor Adeleke has emphasized the importance of the role that accredited election observers will play on election day. The presence of local and international election monitors is critical to ensuring transparency and credibility in the electoral process.

“We encourage all stakeholders, including civil society groups, to work with us. This is a shared responsibility,” Governor Adeleke continued. “We have made significant strides in improving our electoral process, and we must protect that progress by ensuring that the elections are held in a peaceful, orderly manner.”

Election observers will be stationed across various polling units to monitor the election’s fairness. The Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, a coalition of over 70 Nigerian civil society organizations, has pledged to closely monitor the polls to ensure they are free from violence and malpractices.

“We will be on the ground to observe the election in all areas of the state,” said Dr. Aisha Bello, a representative of the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room. “We hope that all stakeholders will respect the democratic process and that the will of the people will be allowed to prevail.”

    The Political Stakes

The Osun LG polls are particularly significant for Governor Adeleke’s political future, as they represent a crucial test of his popularity and governance. Having emerged victorious in the state’s gubernatorial election in 2022, Adeleke now faces pressure to solidify his position by ensuring a smooth local election process. The results of the LG polls will not only determine the political balance of power within Osun State but will also signal the strength of his party’s influence at the grassroots level.

Osun has a long history of political tension, with elections often marred by violence and irregularities. This year’s elections, coming at a time when national elections are also underway, have placed an increased focus on Osun’s security measures, making it essential for all parties involved to prioritize peace and the rule of law.
