Traffic Nightmare on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Leaves Commuters Stranded

    Share

Lagos residents and travelers faced severe hardship on Tuesday morning as massive traffic congestion paralyzed movement on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The gridlock, which extended from the Wawa Bus Stop to the Otedola Bridge, left thousands of commuters stranded for hours, with many expressing frustration over the situation.
The traffic bottleneck, which began in the early morning hours, was worsened by desperate motorists who veered onto the untarred sections of the road in an attempt to escape the congestion. Their actions only led to more chaos as clouds of dust reduced visibility and increased discomfort for road users.
    Commuters Express Frustration
As the traffic crawled at a snail’s pace, passengers and drivers lamented the difficulties they faced. Many people were either heading to work or attending important engagements when they found themselves trapped in the standstill.
Samuel Adeoye, a commuter who had been in traffic for over three hours, described the situation as unbearable. “This is frustrating. I have been here since morning, and we have barely moved. I heard there was an accident, but there should be a way to ease this traffic quickly,” he said.
Another road user, Mrs. Bola Omotosho, called on the authorities to take urgent action. “The government needs to do something about this road. Accidents and traffic jams happen too often here, and it’s affecting productivity. People are losing valuable time sitting in traffic every day,” she lamented.
    Suspected Cause of the Gridlock
While the exact cause of the traffic jam was not immediately clear, some commuters attributed it to an accident near the Otedola Bridge. Eyewitnesses reported that a collision involving multiple vehicles had caused a major obstruction, making it difficult for traffic to flow. As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued regarding the number of vehicles involved or any casualties.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, frequently experiences congestion due to accidents, ongoing road construction, and the high volume of vehicles using the route daily. The expressway serves as a critical link between Lagos and other parts of the country, making any disruption in movement a significant issue for both commuters and businesses.
Recurring Traffic Woes on the Expressway
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has become notorious for its frequent traffic problems. Over the years, motorists and residents have endured endless delays caused by road repairs, reckless driving, and tanker accidents. The road has also been the site of numerous fatal accidents, with commuters often calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and better road management strategies.
The Federal Government, in partnership with construction companies, has been working on the rehabilitation and expansion of the expressway for several years. However, the slow pace of work has continued to frustrate road users. Despite promises of completion, congestion and accidents remain persistent problems.
    Authorities Urged to Intervene
Many Lagos residents believe that the government needs to put in place better traffic management measures to prevent such gridlocks in the future. Experts have suggested the deployment of more traffic officers to key points along the expressway, the installation of road signs to warn drivers of potential hazards, and the creation of alternative routes for motorists during periods of heavy congestion.
Traffic management agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), have often been criticized for their slow response to road incidents. Commuters argue that quicker intervention by these agencies could prevent minor accidents from escalating into full-blown traffic nightmares.
Speaking on the issue, a transport analyst, Mr. Femi Oladipo, stressed the need for a more proactive approach. “We cannot continue to allow accidents to cripple movement on major roads. The government should explore long-term solutions such as constructing more flyovers and alternative routes to ease pressure on the expressway,” he said.
Economic and Social Impact of Traffic Congestion
The continuous traffic congestion on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has far-reaching consequences for the economy and the well-being of residents. Many businesses suffer losses due to delays in the transportation of goods and workers arriving late to their jobs. Commercial drivers, who depend on the road for their daily earnings, also experience reduced income due to the time wasted in gridlocks.
The stress of sitting in traffic for long hours affects both mental and physical health. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to heavy traffic contributes to high blood pressure, anxiety, and fatigue. For many Lagosians, enduring hours of congestion on a daily basis has become an unfortunate reality.
