Kaduna State has taken a major step in transforming its transportation system with the official launch of the Kaduna Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT) System and the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Southern Terminal. The project, which covers a 24km corridor from Kawo to Sabon Tasha, is set to revolutionize transportation within the state, improving the lives of commuters and enhancing the state’s infrastructure.

The event was attended by various key figures, including the French Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Marc Fonbaustier, who was in Kaduna for his first official trip to the Northern part of the country. His visit highlighted the strong, ongoing partnership between the French government and Kaduna State, which has led to the successful implementation of the KBRT project. The project, a testament to this collaboration, was made possible through the partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD), a key player in the development and execution of the plan.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Fonbaustier expressed his delight in being part of the project’s launch, acknowledging that his trip to Kaduna was a deliberate and strategic choice. He praised the long-standing relationship between France and Kaduna, calling the KBRT project a symbol of the successful partnership between the two. Ambassador Fonbaustier further assured of France’s continued commitment to strengthening the bond and exploring new areas of cooperation, particularly in the realm of infrastructure development.

“Today marks a significant milestone not only for Kaduna State but also for the fruitful collaboration between our countries. The KBRT project is an important step towards improving the transportation network in Kaduna, and we remain committed to working with the state government to further strengthen this partnership,” said Ambassador Fonbaustier.

Governor Uba Sani, in his address, highlighted that the KBRT system was a vital part of his administration’s efforts to modernize the transportation sector in the state. Describing it as a significant achievement, Governor Sani noted that the KBRT is the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria and the second of its kind in the entire country.

The KBRT project aims to improve public transportation by providing a faster, more efficient, and safer system for commuters. It is designed to ease the traffic congestion in the city, reduce travel time, and increase the overall efficiency of the transportation network. The 24-kilometer corridor will connect key areas of Kaduna, making it easier for people to move from one part of the city to another.

The Southern Terminal, which will be built as part of the project, will serve as a central hub for the transportation network, helping to streamline operations and reduce congestion. It will house several motor parks and offer a modern, organized, and safe environment for travelers and commercial activities. Governor Sani emphasized that the terminal would enhance accessibility, safety, and security, contributing to a more efficient transportation system.

“We are committed to providing a modern, efficient, and reliable transportation system for the people of Kaduna. The KBRT and Southern Terminal are part of our vision to create a more connected and vibrant state. This is just the beginning of our efforts to reshape the transportation sector in Kaduna,” Governor Sani said.

The Governor also expressed his appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support of the project. Governor Sani revealed that President Tinubu had been closely involved in the planning and development of the project. The President’s support was not just in words but also in action, with the Federal Government allocating 100 billion Naira in the 2025 budget for the construction of the Kaduna Light Rail Transit (KLRT). This funding is seen as a major boost to the overall transportation masterplan for the state.

“I had the honor of discussing this project with President Tinubu, and he has shown his full support. His commitment to the development of Kaduna State is evident in the allocation of 100 billion Naira for the KLRT in the 2025 budget. We are truly grateful for his continued partnership,” Governor Sani said.

The Kaduna Light Rail Transit is expected to complement the KBRT, creating a multi-modal transport system that will further ease movement within the state and promote economic growth. The success of the KBRT project will serve as a model for future transportation initiatives across Nigeria.

Governor Sani took the opportunity to thank all the stakeholders involved in making the KBRT project a reality. He extended his gratitude to the French Development Agency (AFD) for their partnership and support in the implementation of the project. He also thanked the French Ambassador, Marc Fonbaustier, for his leadership in ensuring the success of the initiative.

“We would like to express our deep appreciation to the French Development Agency for their steadfast support and collaboration. Their dedication to sustainable development and infrastructure investment has been invaluable in bringing this project to life,” the Governor remarked.

He also acknowledged the contributions of various local stakeholders, including transport unions such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN). These unions have played a key role in supporting the implementation of the project, ensuring its smooth execution and integration into the local transport ecosystem.

“Your support has been instrumental in making today possible. We are grateful for your commitment to this project, and we look forward to continuing this collaboration as we move towards a better transportation future for our state,” Governor Sani added.
